not a great choice

just sat here thinking and the conclution i.ve come to is that we don't have a massive choice of fish to catch on our coast, summer you have macky, coalies, a few flatties and sometimes a bass or a few pollock and thats about it , winter is no better you have the cod [few and far between lately] whiting, and now and again a flattie or two and if you get anything else it's a big bonus, in between summer and winter you can forget about it, there's really nothing worth writing home about,so why do i look forward to every new season with excitement, and just a little bit of hope,you tell me.

I know what you mean.. fishing holiday in an exotic location sounds like a good idea, but then you get back here and realise you were right. Save up, get a campervan and take your fishing gear round Europe, it won't last forever but you'll have the photos to remind you...

is it cos u r a true fisherman and u can imagine them 3 or 4 thumps on ye rod tip.then everything goes slack.u pick up ye rod,wind in the slack and bang,a cod of a life time and u r hanging on 4 dear life and with yor heart pumping and the biggest grin on ye face its lay on the beach at ye feet.MINT.BRING ON THE COD!!!

Could always pick up some very light kit and take a pop at the mini species list (fish under 1lb), none of the records in that list seem to have been broken since the 90's - www.fishing.co.uk

ballen wrasse, Bass, Blenny, coalfish, Cod, Dab, Dogfish, Eel (sliver), Flounder, Goby, Granny fish, Gurnard, Hag fish, Ling, Mackerel, Plaice, Pollack, Poor cod, Pouting, Rockling, Sandeel, Sole, Weaver fish, Whiting

I've caught all of these species during the summer from our shores. Downgrading your equipment, hook sizes and bait sizes is the key. I fish as heavy/rough places as any in the winter but I love scratching around for small stuff with braid and my spinning rod during the summer/autumn. It's just knowing the right places and times to go. I've caught up to 10 different species in a 3/4 hour session sometimes and might even caught a shore record with gobies, blennies, poor cod etc but never weigh them. Just concentrate on getting them back and trying for more

have caught most of them species at one time or another, but apart from the cod ,whiting, flatties all types, coalies and pollock the other ones have been very few and far between but i did once manage to hook a twaits shad of 1-1/2 lbs on float, what the hells a granny fish. lol

now i know what they are , when i was a kid we called these fish bullheads ,caught loads down the side of the pier ,[happy days]cheers lads.

I've had the best summer I can remember, why? I've tried methods that I never thought would work, at venues I didn't realise had so much more potential. (My mate has taught me that)

Don't just fish cod baits all year, as already mentioned - try for smaller species.

At the end of the day the reward isn't the fish, it's what you get out of catching it.

not a bad summer meself a been places this year not depending on lifts but drove there meself i really enjoyed it this time round knowing i did it an had some good crac and fishing

I've called them a granny fish since I was a kid. Maybe whever it was who told me the name just had a really ugly granny lol.
