Those who have been here for quite a long while, will remember a similar thread I started AAGESSS ago.
Just thought I\'d kick it off again as we\'ve had so many new members since then.
Time to own up to the stupidest thing you\'ve done whilst you\'ve been fishing.
Those who remember this from the 1st time need not read any further......just post your own blooper........
When I 1st started fishing, I used a fixed spool reel, (them muliplier thingies looked and sounded far to complicated and best left to the big lads), and after a while, I got pretty proficient with it.
My son Ian, (who was then still at school), had recently gone over to a multiplier and he made it look quite straight forward to use, \"you\'ve just got to remember to slow the line down with your thumb\", he said.
One sunny day, I decided to take the day off work and have a days fishing. Ian was at school, so I thought I\'d take his rod & reel as well as my own.
Arived at Shields pier and baited up my own rod first......cast out.....champion.
Baited up Ians\' rod and thought \"OK, here goes....\"
Cast out.......distance....about 10 feet.......sore thumb !
Retrived (didn\'t take long)......Cast out.....distance.....about the same.....sore thumb (even MORE so).
Repreated this procedure about half a dozen times (thumb was now VERY painful and I\'d burnt off me thumb prints). Gave up with Ians rod.....with a good bit of cursing and swearing !
Talking to Ian that night, I said that I didn\'t reckon much to them multiplier reels.....you can\'t cast very far and they knack your thumb.
He said \"when you come to slow the reel down, just place your thumb gently on the line\"..........I said \"waddya mean when I come to slow the reel down?\"\"
It was THEN he explained that your supposed to take your thumb OFF the line when it\'s in flight, NOT leave it on all the time........the penny then dropped........ Dohhh!
