PC Problems.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been having a few problems with my PC.

A friend told me it may be overheating and suggested I improve the cooling of the PC.

This may be because we have put the central heating on at last :)

So I found this website that suggested the best way to cool a PC was water cooling so I have tried to set this up.

Initially I put the water into an empty drive bay but no matter how fast I poored it in it just ran out of the botom. (and caused havoc with the laminate flooring but Mikes carpets are sending a guy round to see if the damage is covered under warranty so that should not be a problem)

I have now sealed all the joints and gaps in the case and instead of using a jug have used a hosepipe.

This has lead to a couple of extra problems.

First is that the water when it reaches a certain level just poors out of the dvd drive slot. Does anyone know a manufacturer of waterproof dvd drives as its impractical to seal up the tray with silicon.

Secondly, what is the optimum water level for effective cooling. I have it about half way up and if this is far enough I would not need the new dvd drive if I put a Middlesborough yellow pages under the front edge of the case. This also does a good job of soaking up the slight leakage around the power switch, although I am hoping to cure this tomorrow by applying some duck tape over the switch.

Hope you can help with advice.

Cheers

the down side may be that if you're heating fails during the night the water might freeze, expand and crack the plastic case, thus invalidating the warranty.

you might want to try a 3:1 mix of ethylene glycol based antifreeze, unless you are going to use the pc in the garden in which case 2:1 is the recommended ratio

you might need also need to install windows aqua themes, and service pack 3, also adding localisation software for equatorial regions should improve cooling,

the actual problem might lie with the firewall overheating, turn it down to just 2 bars

The article I read mentioned nothing about antifreeze although it did say that if you intend to run the pc 24/7 it is recommended to add a rust inhibitor.

What brand is best?

I wont be using the pc outside as its a desktop pc and I haven't got a desk out there.

Perhaps I could pick one up cheep on Ebay?

Dave, just use a solution of bi-carb & salt, that should work a treat, and give the motherboard some pattination..... B & Q sell some green plastic outdoor notebook desks, but sure you could just use the strimmer extention from the stack through the kitchen window.. btw these desks have adjustable screw in feet and a hole in the middle to let the water through. have you ever tried to get a miniscus on your dvd tray.

i'm seriously concerned about the safety aspects of this thread. who on earth advised you to use a middlesborough directory? are they mad? it's a well known fact there are hardware conflicts with this edition. most experts recommend the milton keynes version.

sitting lmao a wonder if any numphy has tryed it

anyway to stop the water running out put a big block of ice in a plastic bag inside ya comp then when it melts refreeze it :)

whats wrong with some new paste on the cpu,and a bigger fan, think its a lil dodgy puting water in a pc unit,im sure you can buy bigger fans with a cooling gell in the copper pipes that surround the fins under the fan

:D:D:D

Thing is it all worked...

I was told it would speed up my gaming no end and it has....

Tonight I knocked 4minutes and 22 seconds off my best time on a mahjong tile set :D:D

And I managed 7 games without a loss at spider :D
