Peeler crabs.

Just read in the Sea angler mag that down South peeler will be making a show. Reckon we will have to wait a few more weeks.
I only ever collected them as a lad up at the blue lagoon Hartlepool. Used to pull a bit of the leg off and if soft leg underneath kept the crab.
To be honest i never really understood.
Sea angler was saying the backs should have a crack in it and legs soft.
As you know i visit Hartlepool regularly so i think i will be turning over a few rocks and having another look.
It will be interesting to see if i find any.

Mick.

which sea angler is that mate as ive got this months but only had the chance to skip through it so probs missed it (page number will be nice lol ) cheers scotty

Haven't got this Months sea Angler yet going 2 get it though, great information in there most of the time. Love reading the catch reports etc and rod reviews etc. Also that information on Roker pier was spot on as well i think it was in last months if i am not mistaken.

On the back page there is an article by Alan Yates about fishing forums and out of the few he recommends NESA is amongst them.

Hello there Mr Dunn, are you aware that you may require a permit to collect peeler crab. Or any shellfish for that matter . North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee Website . Thats th North East Sea Fisheries Commitee, :yltype: But I think you mght already know that , don't you ???????

Go to byelaws and then byelaw XXII for more info . I was shocked when a mate was pulled and asked for his permit .So I got one .
Does anyone know where to get a permit to get the public toilets on the Headland opened in daylight hours, and how much is the tax to use them. Cos someone is definately taking the Pence.

i think u may find its for a boat ie vessel no permit needed to collect them from the shoreline if u dont have a boat

If you read the aplication form , they ask "Are you using a vessel" if so then they want details .Also , if you are right , then why oh why oh why ( points of view touch there) is there officials on the shore line asking to see permits.More to the point why issue a permit to someone who has stated they are not using a boat, sorry , vessel. AND further more, the permit reads:-

This Permit to fish for OR take lobster , crab , velvet crab and whelk within any part of the District of the Committee is given by the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee acting under its powers contained in Byelaw XXII to:-

me and then my details.
I don't own a boat, I've never owned a boat , they know I don't have a boat , no-one in my family has a boat . There's a bloke down the street has a boat , but I don't have a boat.

Phew !!!! I'm glad I got that out without a trip to casualty:yltype:
Any way I'm going fishing now . I think I need some air .TTFN

there was a thread on here a couple of weeks ago saying you needed a permit to collect edible crabs but it said nothing about shore green crabs. thats if i read it wright.

I think it covers any shellfish whatsoever collected from the shore line as bait and covers
"Unlicenced hobby fishermen
Bait collection
Shore gathering
Recreational fishermen

thats from the north east sea fisheries commision, covers, shields south pier down to the humber

but northumberland sea fisheries commision covering tynemouth north don't seem to bother. can't find it anyway

well heres how i read it. this infomation is from the NESF web site

BYELAW XXII
PERMIT TO FISH FOR LOBSTER, CRAB, VELVET CRAB AND WHELK
1 This Byelaw applies to all of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee District.
2 No person shall fish for or take any of the following specified kinds of sea fish: Lobster (Homarus gammarus), Crab (Cancer pagurus), Velvet Crab (Liocarcinus puber), or Whelk (Buccinum undatum), within the area of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee District except under a specified permit issued by the Committee and signed by the Clerk of the Committee and in accordance with the following conditions:-

I think this is the permit your talking about

Notice the type of crab (Cancer pegurus) thats a eddie to me and you
Edible crab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What we would be looking for is shore crab (Carcinus maenas)
Carcinus maenas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Therefore is not covered by that bylaw

So why did the official ask to see a permit when the said "mate" was collecting "bait" ?
And why issue permits to people who are for want of a better phrase ,beachcombing. Also they give you the option of having Crabpot tags OR not having Crabpot tags.:o
Isn't anything straight forward , like yes you can or no you can't.

Looks to me as though it's just for edible and velvet crabs and the guy that was stopped came up against a jobsworth. According to another of the byelaws it's illegal full stop to use edible crabs as bait.
Who knew that there was a minimum size for mussels???? 5cm apparently.
