allreet all...was practice casting today . and the weirdest thing happened. i was reeling in when a sinker got stuck between some twigs or summit when the reel handle spun in the opposite direction spitting out line....i checked again to see '( it seems like the anti reverse thing on fixed spool ) but did not see anything like it on the 525....then aftr i kept mucking about repeating to see if it would happen happen again it bloody did . maybe once every 15 times or so....canny gutted ....i can see this being major problem wwhen landing my 24lb cod but would generally not be an issue when landing my usual 2 oz rockling and 3 oz whitings....anyone else had this problem (anti reverse failing)....i had a penn 535 and i gave that reel alot of abuse and the 535 has never ever let me down ~9 i have been get very very gentle with the 525....shame i dont know where i left it /put it/placed it .....i miss my 535

Is it a new reel? They tend to pack the gear mechanism full of grease during assembly and this can cause the anti-reverse to fail occasionally (it happened to me a couple of times). Either take it apart and clean it out or put up with it and it should sort itself out after a while (mine did).

the anti reverse bearing is broke.i've had to replace a couple in my reels in the past.if i remember correctly it's about £9.00 for a new 1

bought it second hand....the guy i bought it off was a colleague at work ...he did mentiond that he serviced the reel and did put som grease in which h said will b ok after a few times/... i have only fished with it once mind...so i`ll leave it as is for the moment ....

Before splashing out on a new part I'd clean the grease out first, especially if it is an intermittent fault. The 525 is notorious for anti-reverse slip if there is too much grease / oil in the guts of the reel and if it has just been cleaned and greased I would put money on this being the problem. If this doesn't solve the problem the do as Smoothound says and replace the anti-reverse bearing - you should be able to get one from Rutherfords.

cheers for that m.t...spoke to the guy who sold it to me he reckons i may have set the drag in the opposite direction ? no idea .....anyho, im confused .co.uk
