not my first choice bait either:exclam: usually take mackeral, and when that goes off get some small brown trout

Why would you want to use them? Are you thinking of using them unshelled as to simulate a Cray fish?

couple of reasons jim2 1st just to try summat different:)

2nd they might keep better than mackeral unfridged other than that no good reason:D:D:D:D:D

I use a variety of bait, (all sea/coarse fish) Morrissons provide good cheap sardines fresh. I go early stock up and freeze in sizeable portions. Take them to Scotland with you frozen, this time of year they will still be frozen the 2nd day if you use a decent freezer box/bag.

Let me know how you do on the prawns, You might catch a perch or 2.

The pike in loch ken are stuffed with crays when you catch them, prawns are not much different I guess. Some pike anglers use fish kebabs , bits of fish skewered like a kebab and pike will take that so if they are there and feeding no doubt they will take prawns in the same way.
I'd stick to fish baits though , are there no trout farms local to where you are fishing? Ther was one on loch ken , I'm not sure if it's still there but there was a time when they would give you trout for free (they stopped after a while) they supplied Marks and Spencers with trout, but M&S wouldn't take them if they were deformed so we used to go and ask if they had any ugly trout and they would just chuck us a bag full of stunt nosed rainbows , the pike didn't seem to mind that they were deformed.:D

aye ray, theres nowt local to where i fish:exclam:

if you have google earth and are bored, stick "corrour" in.

on the plus side theres a plentiful supply of very small brown trout in a loch about 2 miles away

I'm envious , I might come up and see you :D, I've got this urge to take the boat up to the caledonian canal for a week or two , some bloke did a round britain thing in a 625 and went through there , I'd love to spend a bit of time in that area fishing for pike.
You will have to pack your mackerel baits in small lots , one for each day and pack them away with a freezer block wrapped up in newspapers and polystyrene as big as you can carry and only open them when you want to use them, they last quite a while like that. I'd be happy with using the trout though ;)

:Daye ray its the carrying thats the pain:( staying in a youth:question: ha ha hostel you have to carry everything in from the railway station, which in fairness is only a mile:)

also a severe lack of storage space for belongings etc
