Has anyone tried popping up there baits to stop them getting hammered by crabs? Pikers do it a lot with deadbaits on waters like loch ken where crayfish are a problem. Just wondering like
cheers
pop up beads will work to a point, but a lot of the crabs we have are swimmers also any decent tidal flow will pull the beads down behind your weight ......
They do work well in certain conditions, even when theres swimmers about.
Don,t bother with floating beads, there not big enough to float even a really small bait.
I use 1 inch pieces of pike float fixed with a bead and crimp.Hook lengths are 12inches long on a Portsmouth rig.
I only use them where theres very little or no tide pull and only when the water is flat as they do tangle when theres any surf running.
I,v just got in after a session on Hendon prom using these rigs.
32 Whiting in 3 hours,mostly underisize.
The swimming crabs were cleaning the bait off in minutes with normal rigs.
