Port Carlisle is on the Solway Firth and is roughly 15 mins drive to the West of the centre of Carlisle itself. It's a good venue to target Flounders on light gear and at this time of year there's loads to be caught! Recent matches have been won with 33 fish!!!
Myself, Nicky and Finseeker popped over to the Solway to see for ourselves, resulting in the best Flounder fishing any of us have ever seen. Nicky managed to catch 31 Flounder to 41cm, I caught 26 to 38cm and Finseeker managed 11, a grand total of 68 fish, all returned.
The area fishes best over high tide and care must be taken as the tide comes in very, very fast! We arrived early and began fishing about 200yds from the high tide line and as the tide began to flood it came in as fast as we could move back with our gear, very scary and a big lesson learned at this place.
About two hours before high tide the fish came on strong and we landed numerous double shots and even a treble shot of fish!
Finseeker's double shot of flatties
Myself and Nicky with a good few to, along with Finseeker's fish above, all of these fish were caught within a few minutes of each other.
Non stop action.....
A look towards Bowness on Solway where some other anglers were fishing from the comfort of their car. Ragworm and Mackeral was a great bait today but peeler crab is supposed to be best a little later in the year. It's lucky that I packed two Mackeral for bait because a daft dog nicked one of my Mackeral out of my bait bucket when I wasn't looking and done a runner with it, I hope your kennel stinks today! lol.
Here's a few more pics for you from what was a cracking days fishing........
A bit windy...Scotland on the other side of the Solway.
68 fish between the three of us with the majority caught in a daft three hour spell over high tide, a really enjoyable days fishing. Tightlines, J.V.
