I think all big baits are better off using a pennell even in the roughest of ground. From bottom hook to top hook i keep it no bigger than a cods gob. Like to keep the snood lengh not too short.this way the fish has enough leway to get a proper grab of the bait. If there is a favoured bait in the presented cocktail i tend to spread it from top to bottom rather than just one end.. the bait must be secured with elastic to prevent the bottom hook from being smothered and also to make a decent rounded shape so the fish doest nibble at bits poking outwards. If the bait is big keep the hooks big. And check the sharpness EVERY CAST. Even better put in an offset . As for single hook big baits. Keep the bait low down the hook and something to stop it sliding down .
