what type of reel should i use off a boat that is not a mulitiplyer and i am looking for a small mulitiplyer that could be used on a smalller rod or on shore
cheers
slosh 20for your shore....can i ask why don't you want a multiplier for boat? with level wind, the line comes straight off unlike a fs.... dunno about the enclosed FS things like
I have only ever seen one lad use a fixed spool on a boat. Scarboroughs are still popular but multiplyers are by far the most common.
One lad last year just used his 6500 and it was ok.
I used me abu 7000 the last few times i have been on a boat seemed ok
I dont do much boat fishing thats why i use me abu 7000 you will be better
off using a multiplier and the lads that go out on the boats alot will tell you
better.
I use a Daiwa Sl175 on the boat. In fact when I first changed to a multiplier on the beach I used to use it (never cast very far, but did manage two cod on it one winter).
Think they're pretty cheap and had nay bother with it. Scarboro's are great on the boat, if you hit a snag wi 40lb line on, it'll anchor you there for the day. Solid as owt Scarboro's.
For the beach I'd probably look at an Sl20 or Penn 525gs, or a cheaper alternative is the Okuma Magnatex 20.
Fixed spools are quite common on the boat, especially amongst competition anglers using braid due to their faster line retrieval. An uptide style rod with a large rugged beach fixed spool such as a shimano ultegra is a great combination to use. Some people use short stiff jigging rods with fixed spools of 7-8ft and heavy 60-80lb braid to great effect when working lures and smaller pirks. Definitely worth considering for someone with less experience too.

snaged up lad well i have neva liked using a multiplyer and if i was 2 get one i would use it on shore 2 get used to it although if there were gd fixed spool reels i would bother
Cheers for the replys looks like i will be sticking with fixed spools
In all fairness you'd be using a multiplier in a totally different way to the way you'd use one on the beach IE up and down with no casting involved - but it's horses for courses and like has been said the Ozzies use egg beaters all the time for all sorts of big species
