Right lads sometimes (a lot) when using just 1 hook above the weight or a shad on a 3ft length below the weight they get tangled with the main line? I use a swivel clipped onto weight for the shad and a simple loop for a single hook.


As I catch precious few fish anyway, I can ill afford the tangles. Any advice please?

I personally think 3 foot (or a long hook length as advocated in most literature) is too much...try a forearms length

Also don't shad over slack tide

Using quality line helps, some people use Amnesia, I prefer heavier line, 60lb shock leader.

I echo the advice on the above post - That approach definitely works.

I personally use 40lb clear flurocarbon on a 4ft length with a loop at the swivel end and a Gemini-type clip at the other so that I can change shads quickly without re-tying. I have a spool with ready made 4ft lengths with the loop and clip attached for easy change over if ever required.

Never had a shad come off the clip and don't ever really experience any noticeable line-twist. Seen plenty that do though.

Caught many decent fish on the above set up. It consistently works for me!

Best of luck whichever method you decide to use, as you say we look forward to getting afloat in the right conditions and when the fish are there in numbers, and a small detail such a line twist can sometimes dampen the spirits especially when others around you don't seem to be having the same problems.

Hi Kayos when using a flowing trace slow your drop down to the bottom this should reduce your tangles. I have used lengths of trace up to 5ft/6ft and caught fish so just give slowing the drop down and good luck.

6-7ft of 50lb fluro clipped direct to the sinker works for me, tried booms and they just tangle. A longer uptider works brilliantly for shadding.

The only thing I`d like to add to these two links is:

-go as light as possible on the weight. I quite often use 6 ounces.

-no need for larger shads than 4 inch

- keep the leader rather short (2 - 3 ft)

Thanks Norbert, watched it. That is what I have been doing? Going to drop them down slower this summer, see if that helps. Still not 100% clear on hooks above the lead for bait, but I now have a plan..............of sorts!

I would not bother about bait on top of the leader.

However...if you expect ling, a long, thin strip of fresh mackerel or squid on the shad-hook can be very successful

I know, I meant instead of a shad, when purely bait fishing.
