Rod Varnish

Want to touch up some of the varnish around the ring whippings of both my Shore and Boat rods as they're started to crack and expose the whippings underneath...

...what's the best way to go about it?

Would you lightly sand the area, wipe clean then varnish? or just slap it on?

Also what is a good varnish to use? I'm assuming there's proper gubbins you can buy....

Sounds like they may need rewhipped m8,its an epoxy resin that coats most rod rings these days.Im busy building a couple of rods at the moment.You can get what you call Flex-coat from bagnall and kirkwood in newcastle.Might be a good idea to take your rods to a rod builder and see what they say.

They're just cracked and chipped...I don't think I'm in need of a full re-whip...am just gonna buy some and slap a little on

sorry mate damage is done. you will have to remove the old high build resin and re whip and start again. have done loads of rods so know whats required. make sure you put equal amounts of resin and hardener into a cup before mixing. dont put extra hardener in thinking it makes the high build stronger. in fact it makes the high build to brittle and when you cast the rings split the high build. this is the problem with the greys rods, they know about the problem, but cheaper to replace rod. rod should be rotated preferably with a fly tyers rotating dryer or turn rod every 5 mins for first hour until high build starts to harden. hope this helps.
