Rod varnish ????

Can anyone help ? What's the best rod varnish to use on the blank ? I've used high build applied with a sponge very thinly with no problems but I'm going to build a soft boat rod and was wondering if there was something very flexible ,
Any tips will be much appreciated , cheers
