Roker pier is closed for the foreeseeable future due to storm damage last friday, a large concrete block that was anchoring the compound barrier at the end broke free and wiped out a large section of the guard rails and has damaged the pier deck as well, the council are looking to have the repairs done as soon as possible.

Spoke to the office about Lunch time & the Guy said they were asking for the work to be classed as "Urgent" & that usually those jobs were completed within 10 days. Obviously Weather dependent.

Has anyone got any photo's of the damage by any chance?

I don't doubt the fact it's doofed, I'm just interested to see how badly:(

I'd come down and get my own photo's but it's a canny run for me if I'm not fishing:red:

cheers

Steve

Has the pier been reopened yet ?;)

no mate its still closed ( they are taking there time on repairs :( )
why they don't just open it half way is beyond me at least we could still get some fishing in.

is any one down roker way fishing tomorrow morning, I be on the side of yacht house from 6 am, was going to try Hendon beach but don't no where to fish down there.
is any one out early doors as some good fishing marks would be a big help as pier shut and I only no the side of yacht house.

Makes you wonder at the intelligence of these contractors though doesn't it. We all knew (well those of us who keep an eye on weather forecasts :D ) that the sea was going to be well away for a couple of days and that the piers would take a pounding. Anyone with any sense would have removed any and all temporary structures not absolutely securely nailed down from the pier because the sea is bloody powerful and was always going to trash that temporary fence they put up to keep us all off the roundend.

Did they shift the stuff? Did they ballocks. They left it there and the sea did the rest, destroying a length of railings and closing the pier for the duration. I only hope Sunderland Council are making the contractors pay for putting the damage right and that it doesn't end up with the whole pier shut unitl all the work is completed (including the repairs to the lighthouse etc...)

is there any news on the pier ?
any dates set ?
its in the paper tonight but no dates on it reopening just a bit saying 23 sept 1903 when it opened. and its getting grants etc. to fix it up and open the tunnel.

So does anyone know when the repairs are going to be finished ? It is a stupid situation when they are spending loads of money on doing up the Roker seafront when they do not seem to be in any hurry to repair the main tourist attraction ! They are missing the point. The pier is the main attraction of any coastal place and always has been.

went tonight had to drive then to ssp and walk up it tpo get a b;ank. never doing ssp ahain hurry up and fix roker man ffs

Well I phoned the office on Tuesday, and they are still waiting on the contractors to reply on when the work is getting done, thats why I said it would be closed for the foreseeable future :(

They are probably waiting for their insurance to cough up for the equioment they left to be trashed by the sea as well.

Shame Seaham club don't do part year memberships ;)

just seen the security guy this morning coming of pier so I drove down and asked him what was happening, he said as far as they are aware, they got told 3-4 weeks to repair pier, but when they have looked at the damage it was worse than they originally thought so looks like a while longer.

Call me a miserable old cynic but you can't help but wonder what extra damage the northerly storm forecast for the next few days is going to do :(

It is getting a right hammering just driving past and the sea is covering the pier.
Or well might open next year as it is bound to have damaged it more.
