heard through the grapevine. they might be putting huge granite blocks similar to hendon . along side roker pier. big crane is already on pier. hope this does not happen . or the fishing will be ruined .as any one else heard any thing similar

I can understand why they would do it.

It would make the cod fishing and macky bashing a bit harder but at least it might improve the LRF and pollock fishing!

I wouldn't have thought so. All I have read is resurfacing, repointing and refurbishment/replacement of the railings.
Getting enough blocks in place for a pier that long would be a massive task.
I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed for a listed structure either.
At least I hope not

One worry I do have though is that they are starting later than planned on a 22 week contract. That would have them finishing in the third week of November. But when the bad weather hits that could put them back by months so we might not see it open until the spring

I hope they get a good head start now in the good weather.

in my opinion the contractors have no idea on the weather conditions that can hit roker pier ? they can not have men working on the pier and equipment when the deck is awash that's for sure health & safety.
we all know it takes nowt for the water to come over the pier, change in the wind direction high tides ect.
I think it will take a lot longer than 22 weeks to complete the work as no one seems to know the work that has to be undertaken by the contractors .
looks to be all top secret :question:
understand the same company has the contract for seaham pier.

the pier is getting completely relayed and some of the stone work replaced. granite blocks would simply help any big sea breach the pier making the pier less efficient than it is at present , you only have to look at shields pier when there is a big sea the first place it breaches is the blocks,blocks are put in place to slow coastal erosion and would serve no purpose along the pier as well as a huge cost,its pretty safe to say that we have another rumour with little substance.

Sorry mate no Sarcasm intended ,and i did understand it was not your comment, these things pop up every time the council do anything regarding piers walls etc suggesting its done to the detriment of Anglers and as a general rule its forced on them or being paid for by in this case European Funding,the old north pier was a classic case ,Health and Safety forced the closure and a cost of 1.3 million for a complete repair,anchoring,pinning and relaying was something Sunderland council just dont have.

I spoke to a pal of mine today who in the know about roker pier he said defo no granite blocks going along sides of pier but putting new rail tracks along it
