rough ground hooks

I've found sacuma hooks to be brittle also, especially during summer months when polack fishing. Over rough ground they tend to snap just after the first bend. Lost many fish as a result, so mustad Vikings are my hook of choice now

I use probably three types for rough-grounding, depending on things like type of ground (more rocky or more kelp) and what bait I'm using. For a hook with a big gape I use Mustad Power-worms in sizes up to 6/0 - these are probably the easiest to bend out. I also use Kamasan uptides, generally in 4/0 & 5/0 & Gamakatsu g-points (Worm Baitholders) 3/0 - 5/0, both of these are harder to bend out, but won't snap like the Mantas have a habit of doing. Sakuma do a hook that is also very good called the Atlantic, which can be bent and re-shaped - only reason I don't use them much is that I've only seen them in packs of 10, so they aren't quite such good value as boxes of 25 or 30.

the manta range has a wide variety, i keep them from 2/0 standards up to 6/0 extras. the larger ones will lift a crane, the smaller ones pull out of snags, what more does a kelp codder need man

the manta extras are strong and will lift any fish but downfall is the point becoming blunt check each cast when fishing rough ground

pros and cons carbon hooks are great very sharp light.

downside they are expensive and you cant resharpen.

quite a few yrs back i was in dave dowcras shop in yarmouth he was making rigs up,i can remember him saying to another angler in the shop these bloody carbon hooks no bloody good you cant sharpen them.
