Just got in from Ryhope. Parked at flats (thanks lads) made my way down and fished north of the pipe next to a great big rock with a flat top. Loads of bites but they were rockling piling into any bait I put on. They seemed ravenous and I caught 3 of them even on a 4/0. Only got one codling about half a pound which went back Ok as it was lip hooked.

Seemed pretty clear the bottom chucking south east back into the bay. Pulling back through kelp I think but getting everything back OK most of the time.

Guess it was too flat (thanks for help on other post) but nice to recce out a new venue.

Fish on top of that rock all the time mate cast no further than 50 yds into the target hole had 11 cod out of there this winter biggest 7 lb can be tackle heavy if you cast too far though v good spot when sea is on

As said above, the Target fishes best with a good sea running and a short cast
Heres a couple of pics showing the best spots.
The first one shows where to fish from for best results, half water down to bottom.A 30yd lob into the Target hole is all you need here.
In the second one the black crosses show where to fish on the flood.
The pipe and the rocks to the south of it fish best on the flood.
Keep an eye on the tide if your fishing the tide up.

It can also be good from the cliff tops over high water.

Thanks lads, I guess I was in the right spot but the wrong sea conditions. Also I reckon I was casting too far. Will try again for sure.

I work just up the road from there in Leechmere and have never thought to fish it. That's really useful info thanks

Whats the name of the flats lads would,nt mind a look down there. I have a 4x4 Freelander but don,t think you can take it up to clifftop area.

Mick.

hi dave thats very good of you to out info like that up especialy with the pics.

sure it will be of help to quite a few who dont know this mark good of you again dave.

It used to be one of my favourite marks John, had some fish from there over the years.
Its changed now and doesn,t seem to fish as well since all the Kelp appeared.
In the 70,s when i first fished it there was a set of wooden steps down to the beach to the left of the pipe.
Also used to dig Runnidown off the end of the pipe.
If you knew someone that worked in Sykes pop factory you could sometimes cadge the odd bottle on the way down.

I don't know the name of the flats mate but there is a bus stop right opposite the salterfen lane entry point and you can just park behind that outside the flats. You have to drive round the back - if you check it out on google maps you will see what I mean.

If you are driving towards Sunderland from Ryhope on the B1522 Ryhope Road, just before you get to the roundabout where B&Q is you will see Salterfen Lane on the right going down to the marks. Near enough right opposite is the bus stop. Turn left at the roundabout onto Tollbar Road, left and left again and it's signposted a dead end. Drive down there and there's room for 2 or 3 cars right behind the bus stop. Park there, over the road and straight down Salterfen Lane and under the bridge to the marks. Turn left for the Target Cliff marks, right for Hill 60 mark (I think) and straight down to the pipe and the rock marks. Its a bit of a scramble down but not too bad.

Don't think you would get the freelander down mate, as I recall there are some blocks to stop access.

Hope these directions help and many thanks to the lads who gave them to me.
