Sea Flyfishing

Just bought a Shakespeare 3m 8/9 fly rod and an Okuma 8/9 reel loaded with WF8/9 line.
Hoping this will be sufficient for a crack at sea fly fishing, but I\'m wondering that the best fly patterns are? There\'s a sh*t load on ebay but what should I go for?? Also, should I have went for floating or sinking line??

for me go for a sinking line, weight forward preferably. the kit you\'ve got will be fine. I\'ve read a lot of aticles talking about 10 and 11wt lines and 10 to 12 foot rods bit I don\'t think its that neccessary. I\'ve used an 8 and half foot hardy graphite 7wt and a little 7foot shakespeare brook rod to great effect.

flies..... hang on before shelling out, you might already have quite afew that would be worth a crack

simplest of all, just cut a single lure off of a string of feathers/hokkais etc and try that, it might be worth wrapping a few turns of lead wire/solder around it to help it sink or a couple of split shot on the leader.

try making your own, not hard to do and much more fun, these are the ones that have all worked for me.

but even standard reservoir lures can work well if your scratching about for smaller fish - boobies/dawsons olive and the like.

I find fishing it deep rather on or under the surface works better unless you are lucky enough to be somewhere where there are loads of bass

Cheers Mark, thats a massive step in the right direction for me, thanks. The flies on ebay were very similar to yours, but like you said, I got a lot already that I can utilise. A lad at work fishes for trout and makes his own flies so I\'m gonna pick his brains about tying some myself.
