shad rig

I'm sure I've asked this before but I can't find the replies. I've made a few rigs up, using a 3-way swivel, with a 8-12" 30lb weak-link to the lead, and 50lb 4-5 foot trace to the shad. The other end will be tied to 65lb braid main line Is this about right?

Also can I use weighted shads on this set-up as I've just come across a few
45g SG eels?

Exactly the rig I use, nice and simple.

As I only fish in 40-60ft, I go a lot lighter, 30lb braid, 2-4oz leads and I use an 18" to 24" trace. My theory being, the shorter the trace, the more movement you'll impart to the shad when moving the rod tip. Also I'm going to try dropshotting this year, basically tying your hook onto the mainline, so that every little movement of the rod tip will move the lure. Plus there should be less chance of the hook snagging the bottom.

A member on here advised me to use "low memory" line for shad trace to alleviate the tangles. One of the best tips I've ever had!

Going to try that this season as well.

40g, 60g, 80g and 100g leadheads at the ready.

And the plastics.

I might try a 4 eyed mutant sandeel.

Not necessarily , a few variables involved ie tide strength/direction v wind strength/direction ,depth as you mention . eg could be in 50ft on a spring tide with the wind in same direction with boat [ kayak in my case ] and the shad working vertically . Just a matter of trying see how it works at the time . My mate had his pb ling [ 10lb ] last year on a 4 oz leadhead worked on its own in 60ft . Mind you we only use 30lb braid in the yaks with say 6ft of 40/60lb mono to lure ...........Dave.
