Shellfish

I'm having a holiday in Berwick next weekend and hope to do some fishing. However I was wondering if it is safe to pick shellfish these days (winkles). I remember there was some kind algae problem a few years ago and it was considered unsafe to eat them. Does anyone know if this is still the case.

Thanks for that. I used to go to a place north of Berwick for a bucket full about twice a year, but last time I was there there were some guys getting sackfulls. I'll let you know if the area has been decimated or not.

I'll be taking the kids fishing at the powerstation (Torness or Torcross can't remember what its called) to see if there are any mackerel about. Great for cooking on the barby, weather permitting that is.

Tried all around the area last year to try and catch a few but the powerstation was the only place we got any success.

Hi, Could any one give me the directions to torness powerstation going to have a go sometime this year haven't been up in a couple of years and can't remember the exact directions?

Its easy to find. Drive to Berwick and stay on the A1 for about 25 miles. You can't miss it. Then drive into the the powerstation and go to the visitors car park.

If you intend to fish for bass its very poor now as it seems to have been fished out. From what I hear there were too many fish taken that were undersize and now there are very few bass to be caught.

Aie mate a lad told me it had been hammered by people, people supposedly were taking lots of these undersized bass sometimes 20 a time some of them just a pound in weight if that its just shocking(especialy when they are a slow growing fish in anyways) Thanx for the information mate:) , one other question is Do you get Mackeral from torness or not as i haven't seen any up there and what other species do you get apart from bass Etc?

I'll try not to bore you too much but here's an account of what happened last year.

went on a weeks caravan holiday at Belford end of July with girlfriend and her two young sons. They had never been fishing before so I thought what better to introduce them to fishing than to catch a few mackerel on light gear. I'd never fished the area before so I took them to Beadnell, Seahouses Berwick pier and Eyemouth and never seen a sprat never mind any mackerel.

The kids were getting a bit downhearted but we had caught a few coalies and so things were not too bad.

Last day of holidays and the conditions were perfect, sunny and no wind at all, the sea was like a millpond. Off we went to Torness powerstaion for one last try.

Seen guys fishing for bass but it looked a bit dangerous for the kids, very deep water. so we walked further along the front and came to a small harbour (still inside the powerstation) . When i looked into the water it was teeming with sprats and immediately thought it looked promising. However a local who was also fishing informed us that we were wasting our time fishing for mackerel as he had fished here for years and never seen any caught.

Anyway on with the spinners and cast out. bang, mackerel on straight away first cast. I caught a few, the kids caught a few and even the girlfriend had a go and she caught more than anyone else. Best day of the holidays the kids loved it. We are going there again for a week this weekend. They can't wait but I think it may be too early in the year to catch mackerel so it might just be meat for the barby. I'll let you know how we got on. By the way the locals were bait fishing and caught a lot of wrasse though only up to about 3/4 pounds. They did change to feathers and caught a fair few mackerel and coalies while I was there.

Just as an advisory there's a report in todays Northumberland Gazette that people are being warned not to collect and eat shellfish around the Holy Island area due to a build up of algal bloom causing toxins within the shellfish....Check out WWW.CEFAS.CO.UK for more information or ignore me and get the squats.
