Shellfish
I'll try not to bore you too much but here's an account of what happened last year.
went on a weeks caravan holiday at Belford end of July with girlfriend and her two young sons. They had never been fishing before so I thought what better to introduce them to fishing than to catch a few mackerel on light gear. I'd never fished the area before so I took them to Beadnell, Seahouses Berwick pier and Eyemouth and never seen a sprat never mind any mackerel.
The kids were getting a bit downhearted but we had caught a few coalies and so things were not too bad.
Last day of holidays and the conditions were perfect, sunny and no wind at all, the sea was like a millpond. Off we went to Torness powerstaion for one last try.
Seen guys fishing for bass but it looked a bit dangerous for the kids, very deep water. so we walked further along the front and came to a small harbour (still inside the powerstation) . When i looked into the water it was teeming with sprats and immediately thought it looked promising. However a local who was also fishing informed us that we were wasting our time fishing for mackerel as he had fished here for years and never seen any caught.
Anyway on with the spinners and cast out. bang, mackerel on straight away first cast. I caught a few, the kids caught a few and even the girlfriend had a go and she caught more than anyone else. Best day of the holidays the kids loved it. We are going there again for a week this weekend. They can't wait but I think it may be too early in the year to catch mackerel so it might just be meat for the barby. I'll let you know how we got on. By the way the locals were bait fishing and caught a lot of wrasse though only up to about 3/4 pounds. They did change to feathers and caught a fair few mackerel and coalies while I was there.
