After getting a few whiting and dab off roker pier, I thought Id go down shields beach for some late-night fishing and maybe get some more whiting.
It rained all afternoon and evening on Saturday, so nearly sacked it off, but around half 10 it started to die down a bit so packed up and headed out.
The beach was completely empty, I set up around halfway between the waters edge pub and the sandancer pub at 11pm. I started off with a 3 hook whiting rig, with ragworm and mackerel. Low tide was 1am, so the plan was to fish 2 hours down and an hour or two up.
First knock on the rod was a big one, and the rod was really bent over when I was reeling in, I honestly thought I had a big bass, when it got close enough to see, I could see this big black thing, I thought it was a ray or something...turned out to be a huge heap of seaweed.
After pulling a load of the weed off I realized there was a fish on, at first it looked like a tiny coley, but I realized it was one of these little beasties
Around midnight the rain stopped and it got really warm, turned out to be a nice night apart from having to spend about 10 mins after every retrieve pulling seaweed off the rig....again I found another fish under it
Decided to switch to a simpler rig to cut down on the seaweed collection, so switched to a sliding ledger, and started getting flounder, this one being the best coloured
packed up about 3.30am and went home via macdonalds, turned out to be a good night, with two new species for me.
