hi all i was wondering if anyone could help. i am trying to use 20lb mainline and 60lb shock but can't get the knot small enough as my reel has a level wind, any thoughts please?. please don't say change ya reel, coz i can't afford to. cheers andy.

i use to have the same trouble years ago ended up using a tapered leader then ended up getting reels without the level wind

you can try shaving some off the leader to thin it out a bit but i always ended up cutting the leader :(

I use the one with the spider knot to double the mainline. Then this goes on to the shock using a simple single hitch which is only 1 wind of the shockleader. The single shock knot then tapers into the doubled mainline as they are drawn together.

Never fished with a level wind to try it bit assume it is as small as you will get in diameter.

Some one may know a better one and I must admit when Ive had a big one on, it has got stuck against the tip eye of my rod.

Can hunt out the link if u want it.

bimini twist all the way coupled to either a blob knot or half hitch, passes through level wind no probs and the knots twice as strong as ya mainline

do a taper shocker knot.

lightly do a granny knot in the 60lb line, pass the 20lb line through the middle of the knot, then pull the 60lb line as tight as you can. then pull the 20lb line though the 60lb somemore and cut away the 20lb line were you pulled the knot tight on it. then wrap the 20lb around the 60lb 7times, then wrap it back towards the knot 4times, then pass the 20lb line through a gap between the 2 lines infront of the knot pull through but leaving the wraps up the line as they are wet all of the knot with spit, then hold the main part of your 20lb main line and the 60lb leader and pull slowly tight then cut away the loose pieces of line as close as possible to the knots use nail clippers.

the 20lb wraps of line will pull tight to the 60lb knot in a cone shape and form a taper shock leader knot, i have used these in the past on abu 6500 and 7000 with levelwinds no probs :D

tie a bimini twist knot in your mainline, heat the end of ya shockleader up ( it goes into a little blob) double ya loop in the bimini, put it over the blob and pull together

follow this link to learn how to tie a bimini twist

Just been looking for the thread on BSA with the link to the one I mentioned. I see you already recommended there that the bimini twist one is better ;)

Shall have to try it myself for my next big one :D

a bimini twist is the strongest knot you will ever tie, reason being, it gives you twice the breaking strain of ya mainline, other knots do not

Thats basically what I do, Just I double the mainline with a spider knot 12" down approx, n pass this doubled line thru the leader knot. The rest is the same.
