I am wondering what is the best length of shockleader to use with a 14ft rod, also i am wondering if you can ever use to long of a shockleader, at the minute i am using about the length of the rod +10 turns on the reel. any help would be much appreciated
Generally speaking I go twice the length of the rod with one turn on the reel, this gives me 8-10 turns on the reel plus my drop for pendulum casting. For pier fishing you will want a longer drop - I had loads of trouble on Shields on Saturday night with my leader being too short as the tide ebbed I had to handball fish up the wall as the leader knot was only just through the eyes as the fish was coming out of the water. Only a couple of months ago I lost a very good fish as my 15lb mainline snapped before I could grab the leader on Shields.
Clean ground I use tapered leaders which eliminates the problem, only thing is at £7 plus for 5 it gets expensive if you are fishing a snaggy beach.
cheers, for the advice, was thinking of buying tapered leaders to minimize knot size for shockleader knot, however due to the fact i fish snaggy venues quite often i have decided to give it a miss, might try it for the clean ground though
