is it easier to get a good bag of cod off heavy ground.

or easier off clean to mixed beach.

depending on the time of year and when conditions are right on our stretch of coast, i'd say its easier to get a bag of cod from the beaches when the fish seem to move-in in bigger numbers to gorge themselves.. but over the course of a year the rock marks produce more bags consistently in varying conditions or when conditions are poorer....

have you also noticed bags seem to be bigger off beaches when conditions are right compared to rock marks ??? with a few exceptions..

South of the Tyne I think the beaches have changed they used to fish well on a s/e sea, not the better fish and bags come from a northerly.

it can depend on the time of year aswell.

the bigger fish will be found over clean ground in january/ february before they move off to spawn.

in my experience , rough ground will have more cod,as they cod become resident to rough ground, open beaches however will need the right conditions to bring the cod ie rough seas big tides , then off they go,take northumberland for example , you can fish the rough ground in summer and get cod out, but a big sea in summer over smooth ground , you are wasting your time

Flat seas and you'll get bigger bags in the heavy ground. Not a lot in it when the seas away. Also depends on what the fish are feeding on naturally, sand eels, worm, razor etc they'll be on the clean ground but that doesn't mean others will be in the rough stuff looking for shellfish etc.
