Slinky Kate 11th Sept 2010

After many weeks of "Hot Spots" and "Manic" sessions I suppose we had to hit a slow day eventually :(

Not all doom and gloom of course just a bit down from some of the previous fantastic sessions this season.

With Steve at work and Tony "Out of Town" Jonny was drafted in for his second session on Slinky Kate .... as stand in "Cabin Boy", bearing in mind his first session on a "manic" day left him completely physically and mentally drained ... :) :) :) not so today more kinda "washed up" :)

Set off for a 5.00am meet-up to get as much of the tide as possible and to beat the forecasted blow up of the wind at lunch time (and to get back for the football as well of course).

Strange start at marina today as this was the first time to my knowledge that I've ever been locked out "UPHILL" into the river ..... The tide was so big and almost at its top time wise, that the marina was full to bursting with all the equipment at its top limit, all the usual steps down to the river were parallel and boats tied up in waiting area were as high as the car park :) :) :) .... odd!

Off we went (in the dark, as its getting ever so much darker so much sooner) along the river to find a guiding light in front of us.... another boat ..... Of course there's only one boat this could have been ........ on a mission like ourselves and so early ......... Yup , "good morning Shady".

Stopped off together just outside piers but after 10-15 mins it was obvious there was nothing to be had ....
Then the mist came, then the rain came ........... awful as it was still dark as well .....
Off to a few known wreck hits (as did Shady) but all to no avail ..... the fish were gone ..... or maybe it was just the big tide, and wet conditions.
Got to be honest, you do kinda question your judgement at 6.00am on an autumn morning in the dark, in the rain with not even a bite to inspire you ........
Still, Slinky and Shady went our seperate ways in search of the quarry .....
Eventually , after the rain held off (for a while) and the sun eventually almost peeked out of the clouds Jonny struck into the first (proper) fish of the day, a small ling. I say "proper" here because I have omitted to explain that we boated a number of whiting and mackerel but didnt see to count them as "proper".
Mackerel as bait was like draft beer on tap get what you want but only when you want it (you wouldn't get yourself 12 pints in at the start of the night would you? :) :) hmmm well, Ill hold on that one :) )

As time went by and wrecks too we both eventually got into a couple of fish each so at least our blushes were spared ....
Tally for the day was only 4 keepers , all Ling ..... although as mentioned there was a lot of small fish caught and returned.....

All in all a difficult days fishing , we all have them .... but good for our guest jonny to see both sides of the coin now on Slinky Kate, a day of feast, but/and then a day of famine ... (but not blank I'm pleased to say) ......

Tony, you picked a good day to be away mate :) :) :) ......

As ever a few pics of the day ......

not a sunrise I`m afraid , I'm not even sure if the sun rose today ! :( .....

Big Thank You

Big Thank You

Cheers Norman for another chance to fish on Slinky Kate. Yes it was wet and miserable at times, the tackle loss was higher than usual and the fish were nearly all on holiday, but at the end of the day, I had a great time :).

I secretly hoped for another ' Manic ' day but expected less especially with the recent conditions. I was more than happy with the fish I caught today and we both have enough fillets to feed our families so I class that as a decent result.

Thanks again Norman for a great day out.

Jonny:)

Congrats finding a few fish Norm, I hope it's not all over now, as things seem to have slowed right down, might pick up a bit if the water gets a chance to clear. Struggled myself today with only a couple of keepers:(

where were you today arthur ?, looked around offshore but didnt see you, maybe we should keep in touch more (just in case :) ) ... however.... wouldn't have helped the catch for either of us today I fear :) :)

10 out of 10 for effort lads pleased you's got a couple and as usually said norm great read what about a book the journals of slinky?

I even miss the slow fishing days Norman , at least you gave it your best ,as ever .

The bad days certainly make the good days feel brilliant.

Some nice ling Norman well done on a difficult day:), I always like to think of the times i've blanked, rather than the brilliant days when i only get a few fish, then it all seems good....:):):)

Pleased it was'nt this weekend i was grovelling for some mackerel........just shows how hard going it was out there when Slinky, Shadey and Stingray could not find the fishies in any quantity.

Hope Ritchie is ok, he seemed very sad in his latest catch report, no personal catch report included and he's not been heard of since, have had a look on find a fishing boat and boats and outboards....no sign of Stringray being advertised, so maybe all is not that bad.

:(

...maybe I should have just stayed down south with my Grandparents as it all seems doom and gloom up here...

strike a light Richy cheer your face up man it's been a mint season and none of us can complain (well most of us can't :p:D)

Well done on the few Jonny and Norm' - as Steve said it's ALWAYS better to be fishing than working/sitting in the house :)

roll on the next trip ;)

just to keep in perspective ... bob if you wanted mackeel this weekend ... nee probs .... (maybe I was not clear on post) but our bait fishing was only minutes with 3 a string each drop ............ loads of mackerel still around .......

Cheers Tony, I personally think you missed a good day out, we caught a few and had a laugh. As I have read on here a hundred times ' it is called fishing not catching. I have had the pleasure of sampling some of the best fishing there has been for a long time recently on Slinky, but know I would be very fortunate to see it again. I thought to endure as a fisherman you had to have an eternally optomistic outlook. I have been fishing for around 30 years and lost count of the times I blanked often many times in a row, but I still come back for more. You just never know what might happen :D

Take care

Jonny:)

sorry Norman i misunderstood, i thought it was poor on all fishy fronts.......if you posted exactly how many and what species like Ritchie kindly does you could have saved my misunderstanding.........

Sorry Bob we didnt record exactly how many but just enough for bait .... :) :) then a few more as and when we needed :)

I elected to be bait man and with a string of 6 hooks brought in first drop 3 then second drop 5 (I think) then never needed the bait trace again all day as jonny pleasantly kept topping the bait box up with the odd two or three by accident .... :) :) :) yup plenty of mackerel at the 4 mile mark. :) :)

thanks for the info Norman, i appreaciate being kept informed, however next time between fishing, finding the wrecks and of course videoing your day out for your regular supporters, text messages would be nice with yours and the crews up to date catching totals.

For next year though could you just have a permanent video, maybe several cameras mounted around the boat so we catch watch as it happens catch totals,

P.S we don't want any shots of You, Tony, or any boat guests weeing overboard though polluting our north sea.......haa haa !!
