After weather watching for weeks is became evident that there was only gonna be one window of opportunity to get out there and catch ... (errrm well)
And that was today, early morning as the wind was dropping and before evening as the wind was expected to return ....
So ... off we went this morning ..... myself, Tony and our special VIP guest Duncan (lingking) hereafter referred to as dunk :)
The usual stupid aclock start of 4.30am was to a) catch the tide on the flood and b) get through this window ......... the only error was in not informing the fish to be there :( well, for some of us ....
Okay (that word again) lets start by admitting I caught a big NOTHING today :) :) there thats over .....
Off we went with a following west wind and decided to fish at distance to try to clear the dirty water, great trip out to the first wreck at some 4 mile watching sheer walls of water on the immense slow swell, until, we got to our mark, opened the cabin door and were almost blown overboard with the wind .... as forecast, but not as yet blown down.
We, all three, tried dropping a line but with the wind and tide working together the lines streamed almost parallel with the surface, I reckon it would have taken 3 lbs of lead to get them anywhere near straight down.
So unfortunately, especially having a "VIP" guest on board we were forced to seek shelter and head for the "banker" St Marys, which always produced cod although usually on the smaller scale.
oh oh not this time, I'm sure the place was barren of fish or, they were sheltering under the swell with eyes and gobs fully shut.
spot after spot we visited but all to no avail until eventually Dunk hit into his first fish, a small coalie.
Spirits were heightened ... but fell again as nothing else appeared at St Marys ........
Eventually the wind began to ease and we decided to try the wrecks again. The wind certainly had dropped but not the swell, it was (to me) absolutely brilliant with wall to wall water.
Slowly bit by bit we (or should I say they) began to catch a few fish, not the targeted species of cod but still fish .... coalie, whiting, pouting etc all came aboard, along with a fine pollack of about 4lb for Tony.

This was the theme for the whole day, not a lot of fish about and for the slinky crew not a single cod today.
Conditions were as near perfect as could be, a flooding tide, sun rising, month of may, early start, lots of bait and shads, clearer water further out ... however little in the way of catch. ...... could it be the enormous swell that kept them at bay, as we heard later that we were not the only ones to find it hard today .....
Anyway, it keeps you honest and makes you appreciate the better days when they come.
Many thanks to my crew today, Tony and VIP Dunk (thanks again for the "gift" Dunk)
Look forward to the next time ...

A few pics of the day to lighten the post ... :) :)

Great report & pics

Steve

As usual, a great report & pics Norman, well done for sticking it out.

How did you find the Maxximus Tony?

Tried my 8'6" version today, haven't tried a pirk yet but it feels good.

nice to see some one get out shame about the fishing but its certainly better than not getting out well done
how far out till the clear water jeff

yes, thanks for a great day out norman:) not forgetting tony:)

it made a great change looking up at the water:o instead of down at it:)

lets hope the fish decide to come out to play real soon:exclam:

any hoo thanks again:):)

Great read Norman, cod or no cod ;) I was all set to have a go today but got press ganged into doing repairs on my daughters house she got the key (yes one key ) to yesterday. Keep em coming Norm , they are as good as being out there , well almost :D

Enjoyable read Norman, although not the best conditions for "hunting". Over the years i've found it a lot less productive if the sea is rough, so only go when conditions are faverable. Great photo's mate of Toney and Dunc showing you how it's done:D
Never mind, small tides next weekend and with a good forecast, normal service should be resumed:D

Great report Norman shame about the lack of cod, im sure they will show the next time your out :) Wasnt expecting a report to be honest, didnt think anyone had made it out.

Nice pollack Tony

Jonny:)

some nice pics of the boat norm, oh and some fish too..

who surgically removed dunk's dut ?

nice to see NESA's V.I.P well looked after, he's sunderland's answer to Robson Green :D

we never bothered today...:(

Think we caught all the fish last year or at least had them on the hook and now they know :)

I was hoping for soem reports full of cod and ling and mackerel to spurr me on again, guess its not to be.

Sill the sun was out for you lot and a nice pollack and canny coalies :)

Great report Norm :), some canny coalies there and a big scotchie the noo :D.
I saw the rollers coming in earlier today and didnt think anyone would have been out so all credit for the effort lads :);)

Thanks for the comments lads ......

Just looking at pictures again, in the main the last one ....... I think Tony misunderstood when I said "Cod always go for orange" ... :D :D

good luck Tony for next weekend on your trip out on AliKat

Good morning all...lovely bright troosahs :D

Hard going but as said many many times before it keeps you humble

Very nice to catch a Pollack as they don't come around very often...Keith I like the rod very much but am now also in the market for an SK3 to compliment my TLD 5 (not keen on the livery of the SK4)

Good report out of H/Pool on said boat...its now weather watch again :D

Cheers as ever Norman and great craic fishing alongside Duncan

See you all again soon!

My current addiction to Twitter may have helped me break the hoodoo yesterday at least thanks to a cricketing legend :D

Am a bit of a blatant troll and knowing his fondness for fishing asked for message of good luck :)
