Slinky Kate report 19th March 2011

What a wonderful days weather ....... !

Fairly early start today of 6.30am (although a little after sunrise so I had to capture that particular event from the shore on the way to marina) :)
We had planned an earlier start to be out there for the sun coming up but decided to put it back a little after seeing so many gritters on the roads last night, it looked as if it was in for a severe frost .....

A warning to us in particular today but a word of caution to all others, yes it was a bit cold last night and whilst trying to clear the condensation from the screen and side windows with a hose at the berth the water immediatly froze to sheets of ice on everything it touched.
This resulted in both myself (on the pontoons) and Tony (on the foredeck) ending up on our arzes and clinging on for dear life...... funny I know but seriously :) please be careful ....

With all the anticipation around I suppose I'd better skip to the result first ..... a difficult day in which Tony and I had only one codling and one large pouting to show for our efforts .......

Fantastic sunrise again today with a flat as flat could be sea .......
Lots of excuses for the slow catch today but ... hey no excuses needed you win some you loose some.

In many ways the day out today was a winner, we travelled some 45 miles in all with visits to at least 15 wrecks and numerous ground spots.
thats one more day under the belt with the new GPS and its another faultless day out with Slinky and, yet another warning of how good it is when the fish show but how not to take it for granted.

We set out armed with new ideas to try but to be honest if the fish are not there then no matter what you put down for them it'll not be taken .... still, we'll save the toys for later in the year.

General feeling of today ..... much like same time last year, great to be out but cant wait for the onslaught of the spring run to start :) :)

Nice to see some of the lads out today... Rich with crew on Stingray, Arthur on Lazy Daze, the lads on Bacardi also good to see some (gregg) planning to be out and others (bert & keith) working on being out soon ....

all the best ...... look forward to some more fulfilled reports soon

ps. as for the large pouting (scotchie) what with all the media talk lately of pout being the new cod Tony decided to take the pouting, cook it, eat it and report back , is it really the new cod? ...... watch this space ....

:) :) as ever a few pictures of the day ....

sunrise ........ obligitary :)

a fairly small pouting for Tone .... not the one he's taken to eat I might add ...

arthur on Lazy Daze who, I believe had a somewhat better catch than ourselves.

last, but by no means least ........ a codling :) :)

Note the sunglasses throughout ...... although it may have been a little cold at times the sun shone tirelessly ......

Great to see the reports starting, even if the catch is a bit poor. Looking forward to seeing the tally rise over the coming weeks. Well done anyway, looks like a nice day out.

Hope Tony enjoys his pouting

Jonny :)

nice report norman and it was nice to see you's two out there. its a shame the fish were'nt playing out but i expected a slow day as its the first day out and its still early in the year. i managed to get a just size codling after we'd left you's and richy's cousin got a codling about 2lb ish. i wont spoil richys report by revealing his catch :D :D oh and cracking pics aswell mate.

Weather great, fishing fairly average...but it seems it was for most of us so not going to feel too bad :D

Always great to be out on Slinky Kate regardless

Pouting & Chips report (with pics) to follow tomorrow - but I thought that, as HFW and Jamie O' have been ranting about them as a sustainable alternative across all the sandal wearing rags, I'd best sample their delights in a Wallsend stylee (with curry sauce?)

Great to see all the other reports trickling in (please consider this as my comment/welldone on your respective thread :D) hopefully this slow start is just a teaser :)

Cheers Norman - see you next time

Good report Norm, it was a cold start, bet next time you'll use de-icer:D. Nice pics. Good day out as well. another 2-3 weeks and things should be back to normal:)

aye norman twenty two and a half miles to the fash:( im sure the fish per mile will improve as you get back into the swing of things:)

no scotchie fish and chip pics as couldn't be bothered in the end but have to say the whole "horrible and boney" thing is a fallacy IMHO...had 4 bones come out of two fillets which is what I would expect from any white fish fillet and as to taste it was very nice indeed and as a cousin of the Cod it tastes very similar...so if any big fat Pouting come along again I won't be putting them back every time :)
