well well well ..... :)
What with my crew off on other duties and the weather looking pants for today I`d all but cancelled ... no bait in the freezer, no meet ups planned so it was enjoy the glass or two of Whisky on friday night and just get up like a normal day .......

Looked out at 7.00am this morning and lo and behold the air was still.

So it was a tentative drive to the coast to have a look see .... errrm not too bad .... then a drive to Billys for bait, all was quiet as I walked down the street to the shop still no wind..... nee probs I thought as I paid my bit Billy gave me my bait and off I went .....
Crikey ... as I stepped out the door (bait in hand) a searing eastery wind chilled me to the bone and nearly took me off my feet :( :(

But with bait in hand and the weather beginning to keep in tune with the forecast I decided to give it a go ....... (would of been a bit embarrasing to go back in and give me bait back :) :) )
I thought that if the weather ran true then by 10.00 am it would be over so at least that gave me a couple of hours to dispose of worms and squid....

Left the marina (not quite as windy now) at about 8.00 am with the RQ Marina Lock Keeper laughing and asking if he should just leave the gates open for me :D as I`d be back soon.

Out the piers and the snotty sea hit straight away so decided to get away from the out flow and headed north to St Marys (at least the sea would be behind me on the way back)
Its so much harder without crew lol :)

Got to the can and fairly quickly struck into a couple of 2-3lb codling just as the tide was heading down. It got a bit lumpy and the decision of do I go or do I stay crossed my mind several times as Blyth and even the St Marys Lightouse faded in and out of site through the misty drizzly rain.
I think it was the sheer number of small fish caught and returned that kept my interest going and the will to stay ......

Bit by bit I realised that instead or worsening it was actually improving, the wind dropped and the sun came out, then two more decent fish arrived keeping my spirits up.
12.00am low tide and I`m still there (and still pulling in and returning loads of tiny fish)
Photographs were difficult to take being alone and having to use balancing acts and timers but I got a few.

Got to 1.00pm and decided to give it an hour or so more then head for warmth ......... then KAPOW ........... fish everywhere (or was I just in the right place at the right time?)

over the next 45 mins fish after fish come over the gunwhales all 2 - 4 lbd (maybe the odd 4.5lb) one at a time then two at a time (and still lots of little tommys as well)

Then as quickly as it started it stopped ........... and then the wind increased, the sun went in, and it was time to go ............

What a belter of a day ... ended with a dozen good keepers but loads of action and many fish put back both small and in size.

not a lot of pictures of the day but I hope the report gives an Idea of just how fantastic a day it was ..... the real run of spring cod are here ..... YEE HAA

Nice one Norman, looks like you had a great day mate, it just goes to show that it's sometimes worth it to say sod it and have a try.

Jim.

Great stuff Norman , I like some company on the boat , but I love to be out there fishing on my own too , looks like the season is up and running at last :)

Nice Norman it was looking a no no for today but you risked it and it payed off.

I will be trying it on Tuesday and like you i be skipper and cabin boy all in one.

Did you anchor or drift? i ask as on the drift on Friday not a bit as soon as we stopped we had 3 fish in no time.

cheers lads,

Rich , all on the drift today .... the thought of extending the cabin boys duties to anchor hauling was going to push me a little too far :) :) :)

what a brilliant feeling when you hit the "right place right time" combination. .... made it to bottom then instant hook ups ....... class :)

Great report Norman,

I am back at work in Singapore for another six weeks and looking forward to getting back and fishing already! The wrecks should hopefully be fishing and the lobsters arrived by the time I get back!

Graham.

Well done mate, i hope this bit NE doesnt get the sea up too much and then i might get a day out next week, but at the moment the wind looks as though its off the sea all next week.

horizon, haha just kinda sums up the sea on the day I suppose :) shows up so much more when the canera is fixed to a box and the timer is set it just does as it wants and when irrespective of the tilt :)

Excellent Stuff Skipper :D

Had myself a marathon Plaice session over in Maryport yesterday on a day trip with a number of like minded anglers...hard work day with fishing from 10 until 7...managed to winkle out a few fish so not a wasted trip...but I was jiggered when I got in...

That's a cracking haul by any stretch - hope to be back in active service soon ;):D

Brilliant stuff Norman mate who dares wins!!
Decent stamp of fish spot on enjoyed the read too the pics arn't easy solo I'll vouch for that:)

Seen you out there whilst driving along Whitley prom. Looked very lonely don't think there was another boat in site.
