Snagging with braid

Only started up fishing again last winter and used braid for the first time (nee such thing as that when I packed in 25 years ago). I struggled a bit freeing up from snags on the rocks and even trying to wrap the line round my arm or a heavyweight pair of gloves could still be pretty painful.

Is the best thing to do to take soemthing like a hammer shaft or simialr along and then wrap the braid around it, so your hands go nowhere near. Any other tips. Or should I just stick with mono when rock fishing.

I use braid for rock fishing mate but always with a mono rotten bottom and of course a mono snood. Have never had to snap the braid. I use 66lb braid for rock fishing so you can use a heavy rotten bottom with it if you like. The pick up of the lead with braid is so quick 'though you will find you don't lose many leads (most days).

I wrap it around a folded up tea towel and use mono leaders which makes it easier to pull free
Make sure not to try and pull out of snags with the rod or else it'll just bed itself in the reel and not cast next time around
