It was a sunny day so had 3hrs down shields pier today armed with daylights and redgills.

Caught the 1st sandeel of the year and pollack plus at last a few colie.

Results...9 sandeel on daylights
31 colie on daylights and redgills
1 pollack ( 12")

Average size was 6-10" for the colie but good fun on fire line and a light rod, nice to see a few gurnard being caught on bait, also nice to see you again Sless.

The tide line was well up the pier due to the 4.8 tide but the water was still dirty so i was suprised at the colie going mad for redgills....anyway its the start of the summer season and witht he mackerel just off shore and the odd pollack starting to show, its looking good.

I fish it because it's close, lots of safe parking, I always know at least 2-3 people when am on the pier, it offers just about every type of fishing and can offer a variety of species.

Down side is during the summer months it’s packed out and can get abit messy, also if you don’t know the marks you can lose alot of gear. Like most things in fishing it's trial and error. If you’re planning a visit give me a buzz and I will see if I can meet you for a day out.
You still can’t beat a virgin rock mark mind 

Been boat fishing yet Steve?

I have a competition from Craster on the 28th, it will be the 1st trip of the year and I always blank on the 1st trip lol.

Daylights and redgulls.

Daylights and redgulls.

Guys would i be right in thinking you are casting out with the feathers or daylights and bringing them in slowly.
I did this last year using my beachcaster and 7000 as i had no other option. I had no light gear for spinning or floating.
Caught quite a few mackeral but not a sporting as when using light gear.

Have now bought light spinning rod and fixed spool with 15ib line. Also got a couple of nice spinners. Is it to early to go off the piers and get anything.

Cheers Mick.

I would have said yes straight away but going by Richy's report, if the conditions are right then go for it. Just enjoy the feeling of the new rod mate, totally different from using the big gear.

I remember the first time I used light gear. Ask the people that I fish with and they will tell you I try to keep it as light as I can when not fishing the rocks. It doesn't get any better.

Just a short flick was finding most of the fish but nothing of any great size,
I use a spinning rod with 15lb fireline and its always good fun with redgills.

It is a few weeks ahead of it's self this year but if you get a nice sunny day then even if you dont catch anything at least it was a day out.

Cheers guys i,ll put the gear in the boot next time down the pool and give it a whirl. I,ll let you know how i got on. Mick.
