I take it you lost loads of gear lol.
Shields pier is a funny place you can loose loads one day and nowt the next.
But I must admit it does toss up some nice fish.
Don't let it put you off mate there are some great marks on the pier and not all of them are snaggy. It could be you were just at the wrong mark. Whereabouts where you?
To the left of the blocks fished both sides then moved to first gate it was bad mate left there and went to Whitley bay beach and we had four fish out between the two of us in two hours so ended on a high

loads of peop[le not lke pier the first time they fish it but once learnt how to fish most love it, there are some great marks on pier and i have seen some excepional fish and bags of fish over the years especially when conditions right,, iy would take too long to explain where and how to fish pier but there is a section somwhere as how and where to fish the pier maybe sommeone can steer you in the right direction to it,, so give it another bash mate you might just change your mind
Anywhere around the blocks is always gonna be snaggy but then because your fishing on the rougher ground theres always the chance of a bigger fish
As bob says most who fish the pier 1st time hate it. My mate has fished it with me many many times and hasnt even caught a single fish not even a mackerel. Vary the distance your casting to find the fish and stay out of snags 80 yds plus around the blocks can see you miss the snags but not all.
Also fishing the pier in bigger tides will see you lose more gear its pretty safe to fish on tides to 5.0m
I dont really have a bother with losing gear unless its on a tide over 5.0m and ive seen some very good fish and bags taken from the pier so dont give up just yet, everyone has their off days and it sounds like yesterday was yours
Have to agree, some days you get snagged all the time, others it just seems clean. around 42 to 44 is a good place to start I would say in any conditions, 50 yard cast hits clean sand then wind in quick.
I fished it for the first time last month. I just fished the brigade hut over high water had plenty of whiting and some dabs can't wait to get back up there. If you read the link on the other page you made it tells you the more snaggy marks on there, that's the ones I avoided can't stand losing gear 24/7 lol.
