Spey Casting

Got me first lesson sorted in a couple of weeks (Sorry Terry I know we were half way there :red:) Had me rod and reel for a nearly 2 years, been tying flies for 6 months but still haven't put a line out. Can't wait. Next step is finding affordable water with even a smidge of a chance of a fish. Any Wear secrets PM me please.

Had me lesson :o

Fantastic experience, I cannot roll cast properly and this is essential to be able to Spey cast so I was starting from scratch. Had 3 and half hours up at Wylam, only charged for 2 with a very good teacher. Still can't cast properly but I can now get a line out and more importantly know what I have to do to get it right. I've read books and watched the videos but to see it demonstrated and explained by an expert was a whole new tamale. I'm still bolloxed if there's a downstream wind or I'm fishing off the right bank though :red:

Will be back for a service and more advice after I've practiced me little chegs off on what I've been shown so far.

My teacher was superb - Alan Maughan

Circle Spey

Right foot foward slightly facing target, put line on the dangle Lift slowly to about 45% , make big circle around your target slower than you think you need, return rod tip to starting point then rotate and sweep , mainting 45% ish angle, lifting hands into roll cast position whilst waiting for the D loop to form and timing anchor point -

And then bleeding cast.

My shoulder is knacking, bit soft like!

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I joined the Fed this year so I can fish a fair bit of the Tyne, but the thought of starting salmon fishing on a river that size is a bit intimidating.

I just made it sound complicated. you could describe a simple overhead thump the same way and make it sound scary. No more diffucicult than a hill start if you've never done one before!

Never considered fly fishing for the salmon. The lads i see down at Durham use spinning rods with spinners.

Mick.

The reason they fish mostly spinners Mick,is all the good salmon holding pools are to slow to work a fly properly.Or theres too many trees....
