spinning for pollock

as a poolie i mostly fish the tees bay area, but i have never seen a Pollock landed ,ever in this location and i was wondering where the best areas are on the north east coast to catch this species of fish . i would also like to know if spinning or float fishing is best and what type of baits, lures and depth i should be fishing at, it's one type of fish i am determent to catch this coming summer as i have never had the pleasure of catching one ,any advice would be greatly appreciated ,cheers Paul:red:

dunstanburgh castle, mid may onwards, take, 2 rods, one for a float and the other spinning. ive had many pollock there over the years best 5lb which on a spinning rod is awesome fun. try the 'silver stinger' 40gram, think they are about £1.50 these days. take plenty with you becasue invariably you will loose some as it is mega hard ground up there. keep varying the depth with your spinner and float also until you hit something. in the height of summer you'll also pick up mackerel and coalies.

At Dunstanburgh Castle, try a lead head with anything orange attached and the slight advantage of a lead head the hook is on the top so there's less chance of a snag, mind you it still happens. Best Pollack I hand balled up for a lad was 8lb, guess what he was using ? 2oz lead head with an orange twin tail lure.

fished cullernose point last september with 2 mates and all had about 50 each on the float but none of them were size though

S/Shields pier can produce some cracking pollock during the summer months. A friend ov mine had one over 10lb a few summers ago, and many more were cort between the 2 to 6lb range.

Best method is float fished ragworm, sandeel and mackerel strip on a long hook trace:yltype:

whitley pipe and st marys are spots i fish for pollock every year, always have a float out with sandeel or mackeral and a spinning rod with a spinner on,, ive always had better fish on jelly worms or the white color redgill lures.

I have had upto 13 in a sesh from Shileds pier best about 5lb but when the mackerel are in its a sunrise start to be able to fish for them as it's manic, I use sandeel fresh or lures.

i fished for pollock at west coast of scotland spinning with a frozen sand eel will try some local marks in the summer what month is the best ???

I would probably reckon from about May Mick, same as the Mull. That said if the water is clear and nice and calm for a while it could start a little earlier. The best months would be during the summer (June to September), if we have one this year. Some years we have had some really great weather during April but I've never really thought to give it a try that early.

I've been getting some different lures and jelly's to try for this season so I will be ready as soon as the weather is. If I have any luck I'll put it straight on here, really hoping there are plenty of nice calm days to have a go as it's nice just to sit dragging a worm or sandeel through the water waiting for that take with the sun on your back for a change.

thanks jim me son gettin into fishing he is seven so spinning keeps them busy as long as there catching joined him in a club he doin well in the comps lets hope its a nice summer this year

warm sun on your back is a bit of a distance memory for me Jim, no suit ,hand warmers, gloves ,hotfoot boots, and daft Russian style hats, can't wait for the summer, but are sprats a good bait for Pollock, I've bought about three lbs of them . me thinks I've gone over the top with them .

I didn't answer that as I've never tried them Paul so don't really know mate. I would take some frozen Sandeels and a few of your Sprats too and give them a go. Try one on the float and the other trolling through the water, I could'nt say that they won't work as I have'nt given them a go. I might just take a few with me when I go too, being nice and silvery they might just work.

I would have thought whipped to a hook and spun behind a ball lead or similar they should catch. They tend to be softer than sandeel. Used some for tipping off with a bit of success.
