Sport?

Looking back across lots of posts, when It's the summer there's plenty of posts about mackerel, Pollack etc on light tackle, and how they put up a great fight, but a LOT of so called "serious" sea anglers put there rods away until the cod season.

But where is the sport in using very stiff rods, big weights and heavy line to "drag" a few pounds worth of codling in?

Personally, I much prefer the summer season and the mixed species, different tactics etc etc.

Just my thoughts, and I have fished plenty over winters, but I see posts where people go on about catching a load of 2 or 3 lb codling, but are using heavy tackle? you'd hardly even notice the fish on, let alone give them a sporting chance?

or am I missing the point?

Nah, totally get your point Gary.

I prefer summer fishing for the reasons you mentioned and I am moving more and more towards lighter tackle now.
Although probably no bigger buzz for me than being down the beach, hoping to catch that big cod on a cold winters night with the big gear, just something about catching big shore cod.

Looking forward to pushing my light tackle to breaking point fishing for pollock up at SW Scotland next week

Personally I fish all year round summer for hounds and rays winter for cod but when I fish I fish for big fish get no pleasure in catching small fish on light gear fish weed beds with heavy gear even a 4lb fish is a task to get in, it's the hope and anticipation of getting that fish of a life time

the thing is when conditions are right for cod in our area in "cod season" you'll likely be out in strong winds with the sea bouncing and fishing over heavy/weedy ground, see how many fish you land (even 2-3lbers) on lighter "sporting" rods....
its not the fish the gears beefed up for, its the ground and conditions imo

best sport or fight from a fish is a week gone sat on shields pier out of the blue two codling biggest about 3lb on ragworm intended for plaice on size 1 kamazan hooks.was using f/spool with braid and afaw mk2 big beach they just feel mental on braid, if i handnt of landed the fish i would of sworn i would of had a double fig bass on.

I like all of the fishing, summer or winter doesn't matter there's always something to target. I find spinning a bit dull and repetetive but when a good fish takes the lure it is pretty special getting it in with light gear, landing the buggers is the tough bit. Summer trips out are great too, had some great ones this year up to now and hopefully some more to come.:)

spot on.

nothing wrong with fishing the kelp beds in summer{even with a boiler suit on}as said fish put up a good fight in usually deep kelp gulleys.each to there own i suppose.:)

Nothing like pulling codling through the kelp but then again there's nothing like a nice pollock, coalie, wrasse etc on a light gear with braid be it float or spinning. Its surprising how much codling can pull back on a spinning rod, I've had them 5lb at newton and they take line
