i want to try squid as a cocktail (bait not drink :D) but was wondering the squid thats for sale in the supermarket fish counter is small & white / speckly but the squid that you see in the books / mags is big & white , whats the crack ? can you use the supermarket stuff as its dirt cheap , many thanks davey

i use the supermarket stuff sometimes, just scrape the purple skin off and clean the sh1te out of the middle and bobs ya uncle
you can wrap the full squid around a runnydown ad tie it on and chuck it out
good luck

Alright my onest opinion is aslong as its a fleshy bait which is a good size for a nice 6/0 hook with blacklug worm it will be spot on, a use calamarny squid (thats if you spell it like that) me squid bait, leathel bait m8

you'll find boxes of it frozen at most tackle shops, fishmongers and also the chinese supermarkets sell it - i get mine from Wing Hong on Stowell street. Can't recall the price last time but it's normally dirt cheap.

I`ve used the supermarket stuff plenty of times m8.Usually peel the skin off and take the skeleton out the main body, then put a couple of mussel in and whip the lot to the hook.Have also put the old bait off the previous cast in with the mussel too.spot on

i got a frozen box from the local tackle shop today but only used about 1/3 of it will it be ok to refreeze ?? , its in the freezer now but ill chuck it if you can't cheers again :)

It'll freeze again (and again and again) just fine. Presumably, there must be a point at which it's too minging go back in the freezer again, but I've never reached it…

many thanks , don't think ill try to find the point of no return either :)

squid is a cracking bait on its day
just keep defrosting it re freezing it ect
last box i had lasted well over 4 months lol
and that was during the summer

Just a tip tho mate.....after a while of putting it back into the freezer it starts to stink your freezer out:o I get mine in the chinese shop opposite the haymarket and it's only a couple of quid max a box.
I do a peeler and mussel wrap with mine.

When you get a box let it partially defrost and break it into 2s or 3s, put them into separate freezer bags and then you don't waste much. i usually throw what's left as i don't think it re-freezes well like mussel or razor.

hey a dont know whay people take the skin off and take everything out of the middle, thats how they are in the sea and thats how the cod eat then lol, so why change them, its great bait thogh, i like the realy little squid, there only about 4cm but there great for cocktail baits, just put a cupple of them on with a few lug worm and half a crab, great bait

Thanks for the info guys-i have some squid in the fridge which i have took fishing twice and re-frozen. I,ll be taking it out again next time on Sunday.Might even try some runny inside.

Mick.

Re-freeze!!!!????? Once it goes pink it's no good, chuck it. As long as the flesh is white it's fine to use. Also, don't clean it out, the guts are an attractor, which is why the supermarket stuff is not as good as frozen uncleaned Calamares. Excellent cod bait on a pennel hook rig. Thread whole squid over bottom book (minus head) then 3 or 4 worm/mussel/whatever you want. Put head on bottom hook then slide the body over the bait and use elastic to wrap the whole thing into a more streamlined parcel. Put top hook in place and you have a great cod bait that leakes juices for a good 20 minutes. 15 minutes on a medium oven, Chilli sauce, georgeous!

i agree with you phantom once it goes pink give it to the gulls,i often use a whole calamari, head ,guts and all on a pennel with no other bait except sometimes another calamari ,cought loads with it.:red::red::red:
