Gonna give it a go on next session. Could anyone advise me on how far to cast and what depth to set the float at ? many thanks for any help lads

Was gonna kick off at around 6' deep and work my way down until I get a response. Casting maybe 30' out from the pier. Does that sound like a plan ?

Should be fine - I've never float-fished at Shields, but at Blyth I generally find the most productive depth to be around 10-12ft (for mackerel). You don't need to chuck very far; let your float trot with the tide until you get a hit. I've been having a lot of fun this year float-fishing at night on Blyth - generally have the place to myself unless there's anyone bait fishing on the end. Stick one of those Lidl tip-lights in the top of the float & you're good to go - just got to keep a good eye on the little light in the water until it dips under!

Id fish closer in than that mate, you'll be surprised how close in you'll get fish. Try fishing close in for a while, within 6ft of the pier and see what you get. Id also try floating around the edge of the blocks.

depends what your after, mackerel, you want to be abour 6-10ft, and cast out as far as comftable with the wind and tide condtions...

Coalies, wrass and pollock come withing 6ft of the wall mostly, just drifting along the kelp growing from the sides, depths anywhere from 6ft to 18ft. its trial and error, but some good fishing to be had.
