Fished St. Peters Basin today with my girlfriend from 11am to 4pm, with low water being approx. 3.30pm.
We fished with lugworm (tipped with squid once it had begun to defrost).
Within 5 minutes, and before i even had a line in the water my GF had a cracking bite, rod doubled over but as it got close in it got hung up on something and we had to pull for a break so not sure what she'd hooked.
I eventually got a line in the water and first cast a 1/2lb codling. By this point a few other anglers had started to pull in either whiting or tommies.
About 12ish i had a tiny bite which i struck at and begun to wind in. Canny bend on the rod and wondering what i had latched onto. Turned out to be a big whiting at 37cm. Gut hooked so kocked on the head for our cats tea. Amazing how vigorously the fish fight in the deep water when compared to dragging them in on a shallow beach.
As low water approached i managed one more size whiting which went back. After that there were plenty of bites, but fish not hooking up.
Highlight of the day: Watching a salmon/sea trout just hanging in the current right against the jetty underneath where we were fishing.
Low points: Litter left behind by anglers, anglers chucking litter in the river further up stream, anglers p***ing on the footpath where everyone was fishing. I'm sure behaviour like this will get anglers banned from another good spot.
Picture attached shows our cats ready for their Whiting dinner...greedy buggers.
Regards
