He chose to set up a good bit along to my left; I was forced into fishing the rocks at the bottom of the field as I am still nursing the sore ankle from Portlethen two weeks ago.

By the time I had hobbled down to the waters edge I could see John was already playing a decent fish, turned out to be just short of 6lb and his only fish of the day. I cast out only to get a bloody big over run; the baited trace landed about 40 yards out. I sorted the tangle and decided to leave it where it was. (I hate new line!!!) Few minutes late the rod was nodding, I struck straight into a snag. No amount of pulling, giving line or changing angle was going to free this one – I pulled for a break, the line parted at the swivel and I lost the lot.

Second cast was more productive, I glinted through the glaring sun light to see the rod give a twitch, I picked it up, felt the fish bite a second time, struck, this time I was into a fish and it was moving. It fought like Mike Tyson in the shallow kelpy water, nodding all the way in. It felt twice its actual size…but still went almost 5lb.

I never actually landed another fish the whole day; they just kept going to ground. This is one of the roughest marks I have ever fished but the bites were amazing, at one point I almost lost my rod – it just catapulted up over the rest. The fish was on , I lost it right at my feet, the lead weight was out of the water, and then all went slack – never even saw it but it felt a much better fish….I was gutted but it was still a great day if a wee bit cold.
