Hi all

Just back from an enjoyable week in the Whitby area. Unfortunately, strong offshore winds and rough seas hampered fishing from Wednesday night onwards, but the missus and I did manage a few fish before then.

We had a good night on Whitby West pier last Sunday(20th). Fished between 5 and 9.30pm over high water in a choppy sea and landed 20 odd whiting and coalfish, mainly whiting over the pound mark. Kept six for the pot and returned the rest. Small cod also returned. Fish taking all baits but razorfish/mackerel cocktail-couldn't fail! Found that short casts into a deep hole at the start of the extension worked best. Distance casting not so productive! Bloke had a couple of 1 to 2lb cod towards the end of the pier, only cod we saw all week. Found out next day that a youth had thrown himself off the pier later that night, out of his tree apparently. RNLI did a great job retrieving him, well done them.

Sessions at Runswick Bay and Sandsend produced only rocklings and billet and we had small stuff again on Whitby West on Wednesday night, before being blown off!

Wonderful to see an offshore blow again, but as sod's law would have it, the last few days were spent praying for the sea to drop off before we had to leave yesterday. No such luck!! Still, we had a cracking week, did reccies on some great looking fishing marks and when we could fish, got plenty of raps on the rod tips. What more could you want.

Hope you can all take advantage when the sea dies away, lucky swines!!

Tight lines

Derek

Thanks Jim. We should be back up over the Xmas period or early January and this time we'll probably stay in the Sunderland area with family. Should be a bit easier to catch up with you then.

Hope you catch some cod after the blow.

Cheers Derek

I fished Runswick and the west pier on Saturday night in perfect cod conditions - blanked! Spoke to loads of anglers and nobody was catching. Friday night was pretty good though from what I was told!

Mike, I fished it Friday and Saturday night. On Friday I left at 1am and there was a fish of around 5lb caught between 3 lads middle of the extension. There was only 2 others fishing the pier, me and me cousin, I had a whitey and a really small codling, he had one around 2 1/2lb.
Saturday was crap too, a whitey and I lost an absolute belter in the wash. Only seen 1 fish brought up, about 5/6lb on the end.

Thanks Ollie, I enjoyed the week and that's the main thing. Planning to visit the area again in January and looking forward to it.
