Sunday 12th September (My boat STILL has no name yet!)

A quick report from our brief trip out on Sunday 12th September.

We headed out from Seaton Sluice harbour at about 16:30 and the sea was quite reasonable (compared to the week before!) and the forecast seemed to be spot on. The water was murky as hell and we noticed a few more boats that we quite far out but we still decided to have a few drops close in with baited lures.

About half an hour went by without a sniff so we headed out to Whitley Bay lighthouse and drifted around there for a while. Still not a sausage so we headed out to the yellow can. We anchored up right next to the can for a while and took a few small coalies, a couple of small whiting and a poor cod on the mackerel baited daylights, but nothing size. Fishing was very poor, I was just bait fishing and hadn't had a single knock but then *bang* I got a big pull on the rod and knew I was into something decent. I hauled it up from the depths and it was giving a canny fight all the way, rod bent right over. I got a nice surprise when it turned out to be a big Pollock, weighing in at 7.5lb, a pesonal best for pollock! :D

We then un-anchored and soon realised the drift was absolutely shocking, in no time we were far far away from the yellow can we were just anchored beside so we decided to call it a day before it got dark (everyone else that had been out had called it a day a long time ago, clearly nothing doing fishing-wise!). One of the lads caught a last minute mackerel, the only one of the day then I started to reel in and felt a dead weight on the end of the line, no struggling or fighting at all. Here when I pulled it up there was a lobster clinging onto the hook! First time I've caught a lobster on a line! We contemplated taking him home for the pot, but I just felt sorry for the poor beast (I have a 'pet' lobster in my marine tank at home!), so we threw him back to the sea.

So all in all not the best day out fishing-wise, but still great to get out and I was chuffed with the pollock and the lobster was a nice surprise too! I have a couple of photos but unable to upload them at the moment as I'm at work so I'll try and put them up later.

Cheers.

Steve.

yep fishing certainly isnt the best at the moment, im hoping once these tides slacken off and the water clears a little it might pick up again.

I went out yesterday in some pretty strong SW winds, we only fished for 45 minutes but had 2 fish a codling of 2lb and a coalie that was just size.
Sea was building all the time and there was some strong gusts so for a bit of fun before heading in we went behind roker pier and done some boat stunts over the building sea, was more enjoyable than the fishing.

A couple of photo's...

Well done getting the pollock that's a cracking fish, and caught on what seemed to be a hard weekend for the local boats.

Sounds like an entertaining day out if not a particularly good fishing one , I'm quite happy after a day like that , maybe not as happy as a day hauling big cod all day but It's the sort of day that would stick in my mind , a big pollock and a lobster :)

Excellent report steve, your right,it was hard work, I was out well inside of the yellow can on Saturday, only got two keepers, best around 5lb. Looks a bit iffy later in the week with northerly's forcast by Thursday/Friday so the water probably won't get a chance to clear up:(:(. Cracking pollock, havn't seen many around this year, so a good capture.:D

Its a shame the seas are so bad as I would have loved to get out again this weekend. :(

As a side note, will this spell the end of the mackeral?
