I headed to the pier today with two species in mind, a plaice and a wrasse and managed to get both. The plaice with ragworm belted out and two nice ballan wrasse with float fished ragworm. Only took a pic of the first wrasse as I didn't have my camera to hand and I like to get the little fellers back as quick as possible. I also got a few decent sized flounders so a good day all round apart from the weather which was rotten with hailstorms as well.

A few pics of the fish.

Well done Mark mate, two new species for you. Pity you didn't photograph the other wrasse you caught because this pic looks like it might be a corkwing?

I thought it might be myself Mike but I wasn't sure so just claimed it as a ballan. I'd be happy to take it as a corkwing if anyone can positively identify it, if not I'll take it as a ballan.

The body looks deeper and shorter than a ballan to me and it has blue vent. The dark spot on the tail may be there too though it's not clear in the photo due to the way the light is shining on it.

Toppa days fishing that mate.

Wrasse are my favourite fish. I've only caught one but you can get some really bonny ones. They are good scrappers as well.

Ballans don't have the blue anal vent so it is almost certainly a corkwing. The other fish was almost exactly the same and from the same spot so that was probably a corkwing as well.

canny little sesh there mark. just been googling corkwing and they say it has a spot on the wrist of it's tail if that's any help.:)

Yes mate. The water was pretty clear today when the wind dropped and there were birds diving and picking up what looked like sandeels so it looks like the summer fishing is starting. I knew there would be wrasse today.

Well done Mark we,ll just have to wait and see what we get on Tuesday hopefully another one of your targets weather permitting!!!
