The amazing flounder

1st mistake. Never had one like that before. We live and learn.

Couple of weekends ago I deep hooked a flounder so that I couldn't take the hook out without killing it. It was late and the tide was well on the ebb so I decided to put the fish in a bag and I took it home with me to sort out.
I went from Hendon prom, down to Asda in Peterlee and bought a few things.
Then I went home, another 5 minutes, and had a cuppa. After that I emptied the car.

Took the fish out maybe an hour and a half from catching it and put it into the sink to wash it off and keep it there overnight as I didn't want stinky hands at bedtime.

As soon as I turned the tap on it started the gills moving. 5 minutes later it was waving its fins and moving around the sink with obvious signs of being recovered.

I guessed that it would be well dead in the morning and sure enough it was but I'm guessing it was only due to being completely immersed in tap water. I know they are tolerant to fresh water but don't think they can do completely sanitised water that comes from taps.In any case, a recovery of that sort that long afterwards was remarkable.[/QUO

Anyway you look at this it does not read good, stinky hands before bed or deep hooked and ebbing tide end of session,just dont cut it no excuses for this by any angler which ever way you look at it .The fish should of been dispatched humanly there and then at the beach if you intended keeping it.Or you could of cut you hook length and released the flounder alive with a little stretch of the legs walk to the waters edge.Letting the fish sufficate in a sink full of freshwater overnight least said about that the better.

Haha they are troopers I had one similar, I was fishing my local beach last year and had a crack off, at high water late in the night, my dad walked the dog on the beach the next morning, found my lead at low water a flounder on the end of my rig with little life in it but still alive :s still baffles me to this day if they can go that long out of water why don't they jus nip down the co op when theres nothing to eat in the sea.

And your proud of your cruelty? Why not kill it as soon as you can instead of letting it die a slow death?. People like this is what gives sea fisherman a bad name. All fish should be killed and gutted A.S.A.P one for a quick painless death and also the faster there gutted the better the fish taste

I don't no even if I did there death is still a million times faster than the one you gave the fish.

Have to agree with pighunter on this if keeping fish should be killed quickly not left to suffer

So you let the fish slowly suffocate in your car? then left it overnight in tap water, so it no doubt had a slow and painful death?

Yes I think he has learned his lesson and needs to be given a break now!

The first flattie Lynn and I caught, I thought I had despatched on the beach. We fished on for an hour or so, went for a beer after the fishing before we returned to the caravan. So maybe 3 hours after we caught it I took it out the bag and it still flapped onto the floor!!

We all live and learn.
