Today i fished the Heugh over low from 13:45h to 18:00h and it was a canny day. Me and me old man fished the top left hand corner and there were two lads fishing on the top. The sea was looking too flat for codling but still coloured so out went a 3 hook flapper baited with rag, salted lug and tipped with mackerel or squid. First chuck i had a decent whiting and me old man had a dab, then for the next couple of chucks we picked up decent whiting and dab. As the tide began to flood the wind had got up a bit and was blowing southwesterly across the pier making casting difficult. We carried on fishing but it became harder to spot bites as the rod tips were bouncing despite been set low. Fishing slowed down and two hours after the tide bites were becoming less untill it got darker and began to pick up. A few whities showed into darkness and bites became more regular, but around 17:30 a few match lads came on and began to crowd out the end. With too many people trying to be in the same spot the inevitable tangles started although bites were now more regular and we decided to leave them too it. Despite the annoying wind and a few interruptions it had been a canny day for the best part. I finished up with 8 whiting and 6 dab, the old man 11 whiting and 4 dab. Some of the whiting were over 1lb and in nice condition with the dabs been a decent size instead of the usual postage stamps.
