"The Rat House" 07/08/08

Phil, Scotty and myself thought we'd give Brighams a bash tonight, Lug, Rag and Macky for Bait and about an hour before high tide.
Got setup at the statue and had a couple of chucks, but the wind was straight in our faces
so after a while we thought we'd move.
Headed down to "The Rat House", never fished there before and apparently it was going to be more sheltered...

...which it was, much better.

There were a few others out aswell, some on the point and some just up from where we were.

First couple of hours were dead, crabfest, but once it started to get dark the odd couple of bites
started appearing and a couple resulted in Whiting

One for Scott

Two for Phil

And **** all for me.

Last cast of the evening was a bit of a suprise for Phil.

As I was busy untangling a birds nest after Scotty suggested I "turn all the magnets off my mag"
Phil hooked into something a bit better than Whiting

Only had one claw, stunning colours on them..

We gestimated it to be just over 6" in tail

So fine dining for Phil tommorrow night then!

Pretty sure you measure the 87mm from the eye socket to the back of the body (Carpace)

Shame it's other claw was missing, that's the best bit I reckon.

Well the tail length was ni on 6" when i measured it at home, mind you even if it had been only 4" it would of been too late by that time lol didnt measure the body to be fair, but you can be asured tony that if it was undersized i wouldn't have kept it!

Head for Roker Pier but do a right at the mini roundabout at the bottom, there's a car park you can use but it shuts at 10:00pm, you can normally get parked in one of the pully in places. Good spot when everywhere else is blown off usually. Get on the end or the corner of the walkway. Good shot for lads and lasses that can't walk too far - plenty whiteys during whitey time, coalies down the side and the odd big cod when you least expect it. Smugglers just down the way as well, possibly the 8th best pub in the world.

well done lads we were on the opposite side a bit further up ' we gave in due to driving rain in our faces .

the ratty produces some cracking cod during the winter months
ive seen 12lb cod took from there.

the best time to fish it is when its blowing a hoolie beach's unfishable /massive swells
it pushes the fish into the peirs and they head into the bay.

fresh lug/crab from october till december for the codling
then runny down/ fresh yellowtails cocktail also lug and rag cocktail (these seem to work for me )
theres always decent cod there
