The Spirit and my new reel

I had a chuck today with me new G six mag reel down the tyne, I set off to get down an hour before low tide so I can have a few practice casts (only me and the spirit in any danger) being new to multi's and that. I got near to my spot when the seagulls over head decided to open fire on me, that's just great covered in $h!t and I haven't even got there yet.

I got set up for 12 and left at 2:30 after constant rain for half hour. I blanked but I didn't get any wild birds nests and loved using the reel, although distance wasn't great but then again I wasn't putting my back into casts, I'm just getting the hang of the reel and a bit confidence in using it first.

I was getting plenty of knocks to keep me interested like but nowt coming back, I did think it was crabs but baits were coming back untouched. Tight lines ladies.

Hard lines on the blank mate but atleast you gave yer new reel a run out. That's the way to do it like chuck it safe as houses until you get used to it. Pitty about the seagull stuff.

Yeah mate I didn't want to make life hard for myself and push for any distance, when I first started fishing with the fixed spool it was the same I couldn't get any distance it just took time. I should hopefully get distance with the multi a bit quicker now I know what I'm doing, as for the birds stuff I put a bet on the toon tonight and got my lotto on.

well done on getting out Pete. Glad the new reel is running well for you.
I still haven't christened my new rod yet. We had a run around Shields and Sunderland late this afternoon but it just kept lashing down so I'm settling for the football and some beers.
Hope to get out tomorrow.

Nice one. Multipliers take a little getting used to but are worth the effort. I’ve a mate who has swapped from multi’s back to fixed spools and nothing I’ve seen with that would encourage me to go back to them. FS are great for spinning and casting very light weights, beyond that, it’s multis all the way.
Tough luck with the seagull, it’s supposed to be lucky and should have led to your best fish of the winter.

I disagree with u on the multipliers all the way crack. Mate me and my dad both own a Penn surfmaster 850 fixed spool reel . And these reels are capable of casting they exact same distance as multipliers in windy and awkward conditions and totally elliminate any possibility of nests . I own the Penn 525 mag 2 and the mag extra and yeah they r great reels but if you r looking for less fuss and problems fixed spool r the one. When loaded with 15 pound mainline and 60 pound shockleader the surfmaster is capable of 150 yards without much effort at all just a simple off the ground cast does it .

Hard lines mate but next time you'll be into the fish for sure. I found the fish in the Tyne were very on and off yesterday - going for couple of hours without a knock then getting three fish in the following 20 mins. At least the rain will have washed the bird sh1t off

Not much doing at all today. We fished over 5 hours from 9 o'clock this morning with the tide going down which is never the best there. I had one Flounder and Mark had one decent Whiting.
Didn't want to go out too late as I would hate to miss our family Newyears Eve chinese meal that we have every year, it's cooking now and smells great.

Yeah I agree with Billy tbh I can get good distance with my shimano aerlex XS but it just comes down to confidence IMO, I don't think FS or multi has any edge nowadays it depends on the individual.

I hope next time out its a good fish for me, and that's better than blanking with a capital B Mark lol, all the best mate and all tight lines lads .

a lot of top anglers use fixed spool, and many of them can cast way further than me with my multi

Bad luck on blanking I got the same reel as well and tried it out last Tuesday night with a rod I got with it on a special offer from Sea Angler, I faired a bit better and got a decent whiting just over a pound on the first cast and got another smaller whiting and a coaly. I liked the reel that much I went and got another one from Rutherfords he's got them on offer for £50 to go with my other rod (Greys GRS). Better luck next time your out.

Nice one Robbie, they are cracking reels aren't they. I christened mine this morning with a 38cm flounder just short of 2lb, fished along from ferry landing 9:30 - 2:00, caught the flounder second cast bang on high tide.

I thought that was a start for a busy session but it was also the finish as nowt else showed, again though no nests.

The youngun faired alright with his Okuma Mag although he blanked he didn't nest until his very last cast.

So far the replies supporting fixed spools have all said they can cast as far as multipliers; no one though has mentioned fishing with them.
The winching power of all the multipliers I’ve used has been better than any of the fixed spools and the clutch is a lot smoother. Both are important considerations when landing a bigger fish especially over heavy ground. The biggest advantage FS have is that they can cast light braid even when worked hard, something a multi struggles with.

If you prefer fixed spools then go for it, personally, I’ve tried many of both and prefer multipliers.

Its not just the reel that does the casting, its the rod you use...

And I agree what you say a fixed spool can cast as far as a multiplier, but you only see a small handfull of casters at competions using fixed spools, and I've never seen anyone hit on or over 300yds yet with a fixed spool, but its always possible.

But I'll only ever used fixed spools for my freshwater fishing and spinning/float fishing on piers. Multipliers also have the advantage when it comes to a higher gear ratio too.

So your saying a big fixed spool with ratio of 4.3:1 is faster than a multiplier with a retrieve of 6:1...

Although av just clicked that a fixed spool has a larger spool so more line lay per turn... DOH! :casstet:

me being a right saddo I've just measured my Ultregra ( 4.3/1) against a 7ht mag ( 5.8/1 ) just using the shocker thats on both, the fixed spool gives 41 inches per turn and the multi 29 inches roughly thats on full reels so once cast out the difference will be even greater.

I need to get out more

LOL lads there both great tools for the job IMO, yeah Mark mate we are trying successfully ATM, just hope the fish get bigger and the nests stay at the minimum.
