well i headed down to the target last night at 6.00pm two hours before low water, the ryhope lads have a comp on a tuesday but it doesnt start till 7.30 so i got down first to get on the pipe end fishing over low water.
i was expecting a flat sea with not getting down beforehand but on getting there noticed a lovely bit surf and a bit of a small swell pushing in so things were looking good
i got set up on the pipe and had a cast into the left hand side of the pipe(the target) after only 2mins i had a cracking bite but missed it and got caught up on a ledge after reeling in about 40 yards, this happened on the next two casts also so i decided to fish the other side of the pipe casting southeasterly.
by now it was low water and nowt much happened till it started to flood.about 20 mins into the flood i had another great bite that resulted in a codling around the three pound mark, quickly unhooked and returned to fight another day,on the next cast i hooked a tommy probs just size, then i had another about 1.5lb which was also returned.
there were a few lads from ryhope fishing off the flat rocks below the cliffs at the target and another fishing the bottem of hill sixty but i coudnt see if they were getting out.on my next cast i had a slack liner so i reeled into it and was connected to a better fish,i had to pump this one in but on getting it to the edge of the pipe it was a bit big to lift so i tried to drag it over a couple of flat rocks to beach it but i pulled the hook out resulting in the fish lying on a rock about a rods lenght from the pipe,i tried to wade across to pick it up but a roller came in and it was gone,it looked to be around 7lb,anyway i probably would of returned it anyway and with getting a good look at it i wasnt too dissapointed.
by now it was around 10pm and the ryhope lads were on there way off,i had a word with the fella who was fishing hill sixty and hed had a couple out just short of the two pound mark.
i was getting pushed up the pipe by the incoming tide but managed another couple of casts resulting in another tommy,by now it was time to leave before the tide cut me off,a bit of a shame cos there were still plenty of fish about.another bonus was it was the first session ive had with the newly rebuilt apollo and it behaved just like it should
i would be back down there tonight but have got prior arrangements with the missus.
the bait i was using to best effect was fresh mussel/razor and crab
