i for one love to see seals and dont think for one minute they have a major impact on any fishing. the mis management of cod stocks and over fishing not just commercially but rod and line is to blame. i enjoy my fishing but have started to put fish back. keeping only two of the six cod i have caught this year. i know alot of anglers who take every keeper they land, and although this is a drop in the ocean to commercial fishing we need to take responsibility for our fishing.

i worked on the trawlers some 20 years ago and the amount of fish what went back in the water dead was bad.
one trawler one day tons of fish dead in the water, times this by the number of trawlers and the days at sea, we had days when we pulled the nets in full and only got a couple of boxes of size fish the rest went back dead.
After 6 months i left.
now who is to blame?

very good post, scientists come up with figures of maximum sustainable yields for the fisheries to exploit. The politics further beyond powers of researchers push quoters beyone the limits of sustaining the fish stock, never mind what is included in by-catch and caught over quoter or fish dumped in favour of better quality fish.

The devastation of the fish stocks all began following the world wars, prior to that alot of fishing was done by sail boat which were not very productive in comparison, also during the war alot of boats could not fish at all as it was very dangerous i.e mines, gun ships, subs etc. after the war seen the introduction many diesel powered fishing vessels more efficient fishing machines. if you look at fish landed during the time of sail power compared to motor power we just became too good at catching fish and the wars made technology better as there was a need to be better !.
So we began catching more fish not tightly controlled at first nor did anyone really know how much fish was out there and fish that are mature breeding stock and also juvenile fish (sizeable) were taken in record numbers.
So fewer breeding fish and also catching fish before they can breed means we are hitting the stock from both ends !!!.
Scientists say that Commerical Fisherman provided them with info so they can base the quotas on, by the amount of fish landed in the previous fishing year, but still this isnt an effective way to control fish caught as this will only control fishing landed and over fishing goes on and the fish are bumped at sea, to feed the crabs, seals and bird life.
Am not saying we need a war to stop the fishing !!!, but sorry to say a total commerial Band is nessasary if fishing is going to be commerically viable in future and fish there for us as anglers.
We as anglers have no significant impact on fish stocks, percentage wise i would dare to say we catch less than 1% of the commerial fish caught, should the fishing become fantastic again we as anglers cannot catch as much as we want tho, a bag limit would need to be imposed on fish caught, as i would hate to see people going fishing on piers and it being like mackrel season 24/7 but with COD in the winter !!!.
Question is how many fish do we think is a reasonable amount to take home ? as many as you can catch ?.

Quick buck today fuk tomorrow is the skipper mentality throughout Europe
The sea bed in places is completely dead with rotting fish
Heard this from divers at the entrance to Falmouth where fish that arent allowed have been dumped for that long there are piles 5 to 10 feet deep in a huge rotting carpet on the bottom across the approaches to the port.
The good thing about the sea is you can't see what's going on down there.
Like shoving dirt under a carpet where noone sees the mess that really exists.
Europe has created the monster that is killing our seas.
I remember how good the inshore fishing was when a territorial limit was enforced by the navy fishery protection vessels in the 60's
Instead of quotas wouldn't it make good sense to have a minimum mesh size unless you are specializing in prawns? Seems too simple I'm sure those intelligent mp's can see how it will instantly cut the by-product
