Howdy chaps! Just become a member few days back. Just wanted to introduce meself. I'm from Durham and I'm new to fishin milarky and basicaly know nowt. It was somethin I always wanted to do but never got around to doin it because of lifes this and thats.

Anyways back in September last year I went to visit me mate who lives in the Isle of man. He knows the crack about fishin and happened to have a spare rod and took me down to the breakwater in Peel. I caught my forst mackeral on my second awkard learned cast. I was buzzin!! over the few days i spent there I just got addicted caught that many let most of them go. In the end I came home to present to me missus an ice box full of 8 mackeral and what I was told were 3 coley?

Since then I bought meself a rod and have been up to the pier in Seaton Carew a couple of times to have a go but to no avail. It's not goin to stop me however coz am just findin am lovin it even more... am keen to learn more if you lads can help me out I'd greatly appreciate the advice!

Am usin spinners coz thats what I know and used when i was in the Isle of man.. not really sure what bait to use for which fish and that.. am off to see me da nextweek up at ashington and fancy spendin a couple days at newbiggin-by-the-sea.. appreciate any advice for that!

Hope to talk more often as reading thru the posts before i became a member made me feel like i was among friends already. Thanks lads!

Welcome dude,

Best bit of advice I can give, get out as much as possible, with someone who knows what they're doing and can teach you the basics, learn them and your set.
I'm still new myself but like I said I got the basics under my belt and the rest I'll pick up over the next 40 years

We go out around the South Shields area most weeks and your more than welcome to come along, if not I'm sure there'll be someone from your neck of the woods, just dont be afraid to ask.

Welcome to NESA butts and Big Red Tez, do'nt be afraid of asking questions on here as we all have to learn somewhere. For every question you ask there will be a load of other people that also need the answer to that very question. There is also the search facility at the top of the page, just type in what you are looking for and you will get a variety of different answers.
There are a lot of people on the forum from all over Durham, I take it you are from south Durham Tez?

As Sigsy says, keep an eye on the forum and see when and where people are going out, most of the members on here won't mind you tagging along and helping you with any queries, definately the best way to learn.

welcome chaps well the first hings first get your self out as much as possible and talk to the lads that are out fishing most of them will be more than willing to hep but be warned you will meet some of the more ignorant lads out and about who think they are better than the rest of them...but dont let that put you off......as for fishing with spinners you want to get yourself to the local tackle shop buy a couple of different rigs and build your own by copying the rigs you bought ive been into my fishing now for around about 18yrs now and im still bloody learning new things hope you enjoy your new found pasttime

it's an addictive pastime isnt it?! am already gorgin meself on stuff i havnt got a clue about but i'll get there...

yeh Jim am from south Durham... Spennymoor lad I only know the beaches round Hartlepool, did some time there when i was studyin at college. only been a few times coz my work is demanding but when am out i love it. Nothin like standin on some decrepid pier at 4.30 in the mornin, blowin a gail, waiting and willing somethin to tug at the line! heh..

Aye Daz can well belive ther will be some ignorant folk on me travels.. all the more to be persistant though and wind them up a bit and hopefully make new friends heh!! am knucklin down on the forum and readin stuff thats well informative.. cant wait till pay day to hit the tackle shop!! Good idea to make your own rigs.. will enjoy that

Gettin the feelin I might need a new rod or reel.. one I got was a complete novice purchase.. its a shakespere targa pier rod and lookin at the reel that came with it will manage 10 - 15 lbs.. got it when i was in the isle of man after borrowing me mates rod catching all those mackeral. am still not clued up but am tryin.

am gonna try newbiggin in a couple weeks as me da lives up there. got a fortnight off from work and plannin to use it.. got any advice for bait or anything else? would be well appreciated..

Lug and rag will be ok to start with mate. Newbiggin is mostly rocky apart from the bay so you will need strong tackle if you plan on fishing the rocks.
Other baits to try from the rocks:

Squid
Razor
Peeler crab
and the underrated Mussel.

Typical gear for heavy ground fishing would be a strong type rod,

like a Ron Thompson Axellerator (budget at £100ish new)

slosh 30 reel (budget at £70ish new)

imo this is a great combo to get you started and will do for almost any situation.

If you look around on the different forums you can pick up second hand gear for good prices!

There is a good little tackle shop in Newbiggin and the bloke in there will look after you.

welcome to the world of fishing mate, been at it since my old man took me when i was 5, now 52 and still adicted , you dont need the best of everything to enjoy it, you dont need a setup that casts 250 over a field if most your fishing is within 100 yards, especially if you cant cast 200 plus yards anyway, the wrong rod wll hinder not help you, same with reels, get in with people who can teach you to cast, you dont always need to hit the horizon, and if your technique is jerky then you will be getting birds nests, a few of those every session is going to taint the experience, an experienced eye will help you solve any problems, good waterproof and warm clothing is a must

one thing i have learned fast over this side the country, if the water looks rough then its bloody rough and dangerous to the unwary

Well I took your advice lads and finally got meself a new rod n reel from tackle shop up at redcar. Couple who run the place dead canny with lots of advice. Got meself somthin cheap and cheerfull until i find me ground - a 13ft daiwa beachcaster for £55 - money, as it is for everyone i know is pretty tight at the mo. bloke at shop was possitive it was a good as rod as any.

Got meself up to South Gare on the Sunday night with a couple of mates. Caught nowt but pneumonia, and lost all me rigs on rocks...still I got out there.. too windy.. spent half the time chasin after me bait box blowin away and watchin all me worms fallin off the hook on me casts. heh!

did a bit research on net when i got back.. learned how to make me own rigs and slide worms on hooks and what not. so next time am adament it'll be better goin!

Am at Newbiggin today to see me da so will give it a try up there... maybe blythe peire on way home tomorow.

will put up on the report page if i catch owt.
