Launched into a canny swell at Cullercoats this morning at 7am. Heading out to sea, wondering if I should be turning round and heading back in, but once past the end of the rocks and the breakers, it wasn't quite as,..... hmmm. Trouble is, when fishing within a couple of miles from shore, the sea is a lot more confused with the swell returning back out to sea after bouncing off piers and promenades.
Had a few drifts over a wreck, but not a sniff, so headed over to the can to drift fish with hokais but again, nowt, and nothing showing on the sounder.
Poured some coffee out and sipping away, the picture on the sounder changed from nowt to almost going black, so over went the hokias and about 15 ft from the bottom, straight into fish, but only coalies. They were all about the pound mark. This went on for about 10 mins then they disappeared as quick as they had arrived. Fished on a bit longer but that was it, no cod and with my grandsons christening time looming, it was time to head home.
Stopped by another small boat from out the Tyne and he said he had about 20 fish, all to rubber lures, so there was fish there, but not for me
You can't win em all
